I will preface this by saying I’m not in the “Mainieri sucks and his time has past” camp! He hasn’t forgotten how to coach/manage baseball. Baseball is a different beast and SEC is loaded with quality teams.

The article in The Advocate about Kaminer raised my eyebrows.

quote:

Recruiting coordinator Nolan Cain told coach Paul Mainieri the Tigers had signed a left-handed pitcher who threw consistent strikes. Instead, Kaminer struggled during fall practice. “He did not look anything like what Nolan described him to me,” Mainieri said. “I say that affectionately, but I was very concerned. He did not look comfortable. He did not look confident.”

That infers Mainieri knew little about him. How do build a roster without knowing the prospects? I know baseball recruiting is different than other sports and scholarship restrictions impact the way you manage recruiting etc but it just seemed odd to me.

He didn’t even know if Peterson hit in HS. He puts 0 effort into recruiting and it shows.

Paul threw in the towel after 2017. I guess he figured a spot in the finals was good enough for another 10 years. Again, hiring former players with zero coaching experience is both stupid and lazy, and that story is a perfect example of both. Hopefully Paul either retires or is shown the door after this season. It’s time.

It’s an incredibly difficult sport to recruit. You can’t just watch film and see if a guy is good enough to play for you. You have a better chance of seeing recruits facing better talent in the summer so your two assistants go out beat the street looking for their guys. I would say that many head coaches take the word of their assistants without seeing a kid play before he gets to your campus

A few years ago my son was participating in a Perfect Games tournament in Atlanta ( Biggest one in the country). Alan Dunn and Nolan Cain were present and scouting recruits. Mainieri nowhere to be found. How many coaches strictly rely on their assistants for recruiting and never make any effort to go see a kid in person? Pure laziness and resting on his Laurels IMO.

Not when it’s LSU lol. But really, it’s not anymore inexact then any other sport

It would be easier if the head coach had a hand in things, being that the budget for coaching & recruiting in baseball isn’t much.

If he didn't believe his assistants in getting the players they wanted, why would he need assistants?

This is not earth shattering news here.

Is that really throwing someone under the bus or just making a comment on what he was told?

Not scouting =/= not recruiting.

Nolan Cain does the scouting he tells CPM what the player can offer and Cain does do most of the recruiting but it doesn’t mean Maineiri doesn’t do anything to get the kid to commit to LSU.

This is just dumb. Look, paul is a good coach, but college baseball has TWO paid assistants. Two. That means all three of them (paul included) better have their hands in everything.

Like people have said baseball recruiting is much more subjective than other sport. It's not uncommon for the recruiting coordinator to do most of the visits and scouting.

It's not like PM just shows up on the first day of fall ball and asks who these kids are. There are probably a lot of players he doesn't watch in person, that's why you have a recruiting coordinator to go spend a week on the road at a time to scout all these kids. But he absolutely is involved in recruiting and roster management

He said he took batting practice a couple times and was hitting bombs.

I read the article and thought the same thing.
It seems like we have a young coach that scouts and brings in the players without much over sight.
Now perhaps the pitcher mentioned is an outlier, but it sure looks bad.

But by and large the pitching talent seems OK. It’s the recruiting of every day players that have tailed off.

Looking over the non pitchers we signed in 2017 and 2018 do you think our recruiting coordinator is bringing in top talent and filling holes in our roster? I’m beginning to have questions. Some of these 2018 guys need to measure up.
