Well, I was talking to someone whose 3rd cousin's best friend's mailman also delivers mail to the LSU Baseball office, and he says it's a lie.

But it is a spooky situation to see your future head coach talk about his players like that in the press. Very poor judgment. You dont hear that kind of statement coming from other SEC coaches, running down current players.
You people need to pull up your panties and get a damned grip. HE'S NOT RUNNING DOWN PLAYERS!!!!!!!
He did not call out specific players, label them as awful, terrible, bad players who can't catch/hit/throw, etc.
He made a generalization about the overall level of talent at LSU this season as compared to previous seasons. It was 100% accurate and true.
You all are acting like he called Mahtook a no talent douchebag in the media. Good God.

Regardless of the extent of "right or wrong" for him to say these things, why on earth would he say them to the media? It's certainly his right to feel that way and to even say it behind closed doors. What good can possibly come of saying that COLLECTIVELY the current team is talent deficient TO THE PUBLIC during the season?
Let's try this one more time.
He was asked a question on the spot. As another poster said, he didn't call a press conference and announce to the world that ALL of his players are terrible, awful, talentless hacks who lied to him and made him recruit them and now they are playing shitty and costing wins.
A reporter asked him a direct question and he answered it honestly.
The "good" if you HAVE to label it is this. PM knows what the problem is at LSU and he took FULL responsibility for that problem. That's it.
In reality, there is no "good" in his statement. He could have lied his arse off (like my coach does) and said that the reason LSU is off this season is because the SECW is such a tough place to play, it's a long season and we're worn out, we have to get some guys into the right situation, the new bats have taken us by surprise, yada, yada, yada.
This situation comes down to the fact that LSU rantards who are ALREADY foaming at the mouth to get rid of PM are taking this comment and running with it. THAT, is where this issue lies.

1. Solving a problem requires that you first acknowledge you have a problem to begin with.
2. Coach Maineri tells the truth. This team is not talented. period.
3. I don't want a coach who is so polyannish that he thinks the results he is getting will magically disappear.
4. LSU baseball needs better players. The truth. I don't care if some kids get their feelings hurt. This is not little league baseball anymore. If you can't cut the mustard, go somewhere else. No one gets a blue ribbon for doing their best. You either produce at the level LSU is accostumed to or you play for UNO or Tulane.
5. Maineri recruited these players. It did not work out. Clean house and start over.

This is BS..
HE HAS THE TALENT..
In what year did LSU have so many young pitchers throwing in the 90s?
In what year did LSU have the type of speed they have now through the lineup?
Why was a player like Nola and Hanover awesome as frosh and now somehow is less talented??
IF CPM is so fricking honest where is he throwing his two patheric assistants under the fricking bus?
He hired a GA to be his hitting coach.. He hired a guy that never was a pitching coach to be his pitching coach.
THE TALENT IS THERE you just have to have the coaches to make use of that talent. The problem is you have fricking assistants that simply do not know how to develop anything.

PM has always been pretty candid about his teams abilities. Thats his personality, take it or leave it. Saying that talent level is not where it was a couple years ago is common sense. He also said the blame goes on him, not the players. He said those guys give it their all.
Now is it a shock that everyone here blew it out of proportion?

I agree Catman. With the way he was talking in the preseason and early in the season, there is no way he can sit there and not think some of these guys regressed or didn't meet expectations.
On the other hand, with some players not stepping up, it has magnified the fact that we have zero talent on our bench to replace these guys that were supposed to make us a competitive team.

I agree.
I'll admit that I'm NOT calling for PM to be fired. I want LSU baseball to succeed. Having said that, it's not a question of whether PM is being honest w/ his assessement of team talent or the fact that he's being accountable for the team's short falls this year; the point is how to get the most out of the team w/ what remains of this season. I've coached teens and raised teens/young adults. I can promise you than not many teens/young adults respond well to being called out in the media. Yup, he didn't name names, but he named the team---same thing. Regardless of the setting in which PM granted the interview, for the sake of the team he coaches, he should've answered the question differently. He can still take personal accountablility w/o throwing 19-21 year old kids under the bus.

I just want to see him accountable and admit he fricked up in hiring his batting coach and pitching coach.
Those two are grown men. Well almost..

I think I heard you call in on Scone's show a couple weeks ago.

I find this funny.
The way Les Miles gets killed for speaking to media and basically "dodging questions" or "not saying what he means", Mainieri is getting killed for saying his players suck.
I respect him for saying it, tbh.
Maybe it will light a fire under their arse.

I'll play.
some, not the level as years past. thus the crux of this thread.
so many young pitcher throwing mid 90's? uh, only two on this team. is that "many"? one more than last year?
let see, 2007 you had mahtook, you still have mahtook, you had j. m., no j.m. on this team, you had nola, still have nola. you had d.j., ok jones is probably as fast. leon landry? no leon landry on this team. ross vs gibbs? gibbs schimpf vs catz? schimpt dean vs edward? wash, D.H. vs hanover? wash
i go with 2007.
nola has a higher b.a. now than then. hanover is starter now vs bench player then.
he wasn't asked that question
maybe you are right on sanchez? grewe, he was an assistant on c.w.s. team at n.d., not sure he is all that bad.

Alsup, Nola, Gausman and Hannover have been disappointing. Watkins, Edward, and Ross have been dreadful.
Mikie has done well, Katz has been solid most of the year, Rhymes has been very good, and McCune was great to start and has been solid since.

I'm all for coaches being honest and refraining from "coach speak", but I think a line is crossed when you say your team has a "talent deficiency." This implies that PM lacks faith in his players...and he doesn't think they can compete.
His job is to be a leader and good leaders do not make excuses for poor performance. His job is to motivate and teach. His job is to continually strive to get better despite the circumstances.
In this case, he is acting as a poor leader. What purpose does his statement serve other than that he is willing to state the obvious?

This is what PM said before the season. It's from the article linked above:
"Although Mainieri looks forward to Ranaudo’s future in professional baseball, he also looks forward to the future of his team after retaining six drafted signees.
The player Mainieri may be most excited about is right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman:
“He has a power arm. He has a great pitcher’s body and the sky is the limit for this guy,” said Mainieri. “He set an extremely high price tag on himself, and rightly so because this kid is capable of being ‘Ranaudo-ish.’ He’s capable of being a top five pick in a couple of years.”
The Tigers retained two players drafted in the 19th round: right-handed pitcher Ryan Eades and outfielder/infielder JaCoby Jones.
“Most prognosticators felt these kids had a chance to go between the first and third rounds in the draft,” said Mainieri.
Mainieri compares Jones’ talent to that of current Tiger Mikie Mahtook.
“This kid is an electric player,” said Mainieri. “He can run. He can hit. He’s got extremely great bat speed. He’s got a great arm. He can play anywhere on the field. He can play shortstop as well as any other position.”
Eades led Northshore High School to the state championship in his junior season, but a torn labrum forced him to play first base as a senior.
“This kid is now back on the mound. He’s working through his rehabilitation process,” said Mainieri. “His velocity, I don’t know if its back up to 93, 94 yet, but it is into the 90, 91 range, and I expect in time as his shoulder and his arm continue to regain strength, that this kid can be an electric guy on the mound for us also.”
With the departure of Micah Gibbs to the Chicago Cubs leaving LSU without an everyday catcher, Mainieri said holding on to 46th round selection Tyler Ross was a very critical aspect of the recruiting class.
Additionally, the Tigers were able to retain 21st round pick, right-handed pitcher Tyler Jones, and 42nd round selection, left-handed pitcher Mitchell Hopkins.
The Tigers also signed 12 players who were not drafted by MLB, led by LSU-Eunice transfer, infielder Raph Rhymes.
“If you look at his statistics, they’re borderline obscene,” said Mainieri. “How does a guy strike out eight times in 238 at bats and hit .483 and drive in 98 runs?”
at Mainieri.
How did these guys go from "electric," "obscene," "Ranaudo-ish," to talentless clowns in just a few months. I wonder what it could be?
