I think he saw the writing on the wall with the way Pimpton and Green were performing in camp
Markway wanted more passes and apparently was NOT satisfied just being the "Blocking" Tight End, with a pass coming his way occasionally. (EGO comes into play too. Being the "Blocking" TE at LSU is a big deal, but it wasn't enough)

Pimpton and Green are the "Pass Catching" TE's, but both can't block their way out of wet paper bags, so who's going to block now? (Mason Taylor )

Another factor is the departure of Denbrock, who was also the TE coach. Maybe Markway doesn't "Click" with the new TE Coach Slade Nagle for whatever reason.

I guess he feels more comfortable at Nebraska where he'll probably be the fastest TE on the team and get more passes..........

Neat. So he can "walk on" and somebody can pay him enough NIL to zero out all his costs.

Cant wait for a team to try to steal players mid season to bulk up for a stretch run.

It's hard to imagine he would strictly be used as a "blocking" TE. You can't just put guys like Pimpton and Green in only on passing plays. Opponents would quickly identify that tendency. LSU is likely run multiple TE sets often, and Nussmeier is VERY likely to target the TEs far more than Daniels did. Look no further than the fact Taylor had a season high in targets, catches, and yards in the bowl game vs. Wisconsin. It seems like if you were a TE LSU, this season, would be a good place to be.

Perhaps he did get pushed down the depth chart. But I can't see him being totally eliminated. It was an interesting transfer. Particularly the timing. But it was probably an instance of a guy LSU normally wouldn't recruit except for the fact they had an assistant with ties to St. Louis. With that assistant gone (along with the OC), he probably saw LSU was eventually moving more towards the type of players they normally recruit Pimpton (Texas) and Green (Louisiana). There just haven't been a lot of midwestern guys who have come to LSU in the last 20 or so years and been great. That's why I don't think it's all that surprising almost all of the new assistants have deep Louisiana/southeast ties.

Nebraska has Carter Nelson who was the #3 TE in the country last year as well as Thomas Fidone who was the #1 TE in the c/o 21. Markway will be joining as a walkon which makes him eligible to play and then as long as his academics are up to par they can put him on scholarship in December. Nebraska utliizes their TEs quite a bit so he'll be targeted more often.

What was his reason for leaving lsu anyway?

Couldn't handle the rigors of an LSU education, especially as a Sports Administration major.

I have no issues with a player transferring to an out of conference team if he has a minimal shot at playing time. Hope he has success like Trey palmer did.

Nebraska, damn, there was a day Lsu played second fiddle to Big Red. Not so anymore, we have (3) future pros at tight end, giving Nebraska our leftover 4th. Not to diminish Markway , he showed good production last year.

Someone mentioned back when he committed that he might transition someday to offensive tackle. I guess if you're not happy catching the occasional pass, you wouldn't be happy as a lineman.

Hope he fails miserably. Awful timing and very selfish decision.

Mac Markway is a Nebraska sounding name.
