Good info I-59 Tiger. Can only imagine the disappointment the team was feeling BUT Coach Mac shouldn't have allowed a team vote to decide on a bowl... Imagine Coach Mac knew the vote outcome before it happened and he too acted rashly.

I was in graduate school that season - the win against Auburn was one of the greatest games I ever attended. The Cotton Bowl withdrawing their invitation left a bitter taste among the Tiger Nation for many years. We had been to the inaugural Peach Bowl the year before (defeating FSU). The Peach Bowl extended an invitation, but the team being extremely bitter at the whole situation, turned it down.

another oddity that impacted that LSU team was not having won a share of the SEC Title. LSU was 9-1 and SEC Champion Tennessee was 9-1. Both team's lone loss was to Ole Miss -- in Jackson (for that matter then unbeaten Georgia lost 25-17 to Ole Miss at Mississippi Memorial a few weeks before the LSU-Ole Miss game).

LSU lost late to Ole Miss, 26-23. Ole Miss stomped Tennessee, 38-0. (This game had an incredible build up which is good offseason stuff that can be regaled at an appropriate time.)

But the SEC did not have uniform schedules. Some teams would play as many as 7 or 8 SEC games. Some teams only played 5 or even 4 as LSU had played in the prior year, 1968.Throughout the 1960s -- and a stray year or two in the 50s -- the SEC had "designated conference games" so each team would have six conference games. TCU and Tulane counted as conference games in 1968.

However that practice ended in 1969. Tennessee went 5-1 in the SEC, LSU went 4-1 in the SEC. In 1961 Alabama and LSU went unbeaten in SEC play and were co-champs since the winning percentage was the same. Alabama was 7-0 in SEC play and LSU was 6-0, but they were both 1.000 in SEC play. In 1969 Tennessee was .833 in SEC play and LSU was .800. Therefor Tennessee was SEC champion.

The 1969 AP Poll - FINAL POLL - oops. This is the final poll post bowl results.

Texas (11–0) (36)
Penn State (11–0) (7)
USC (10–0–1)
Ohio State (8–1) (2)
Notre Dame (8–2–1)
Missouri (9–2)
Arkansas (9–2)
Ole Miss (8–3)
Michigan (8–3)
LSU (9–1)
Nebraska (9–2)
Houston (9–2)
UCLA (8–1–1)
Florida (9–1–1)
Tennessee (9–2)
Colorado (8–3)
West Virginia (10–1)
Purdue (8–2)
Stanford (7–2–1)

Our LSU Tigers were very unlucky... Unlucky to have lost to Ole Miss... Unlucky to have Notre Dame end their self-imposed bowl ban. It would have been great if bowls actually coordinated their invites but the bowl system of 'every man for himself' was precedent for a very long time.

Geaux Tigers.

How did an 8-1-1 Notre Dame team go and not a 9-1 LSU team? I get why Texas played in it, but I agree LSU got the short end of that stick.

That final poll sums up the screw job. LSU was #8 in the final regular season poll and Notre Dame was 9th. Notre Dame loses to Texas, yet climbed to 5th and LSU dropped to 10th. Ohio St boycotts its bowl due to a snit with the Rose Bowl, and they still get first place votes for dodging USC.

LSU ranked 9th in scoring (34.9 PP) and 2nd in scoring defense (9.1 PPG). LSU's only loss was on the road to an Ole Miss team with a generationally great QB. Ole Miss won the Sugar Bowl over #3 Arkansas, Texas' best win. LSU absolutely could have won the Cotton, and had they won, they likely would have been voted a share of the national title as no one really respected Penn St's schedule back then. Their best non-bowl win was over West Virginia.

LSU wasn't in the top 5 solely because they didn't start the season ranked. Poll inertia was a real thing.

Fact is that LSU could have went to a bowl and refused. That's what hurt the ranking.

1969 Cotton Bowl was one of the best screw ever>

LSU was already told they were going to be invited.

One person on the Cotton Bowl committee got Notre Dame to play in a Bowl for the first time since the 1924 Rose Bowl.

The committee votes Notre Dame in over LSU after having told LSU they would be invited.

Ohio State had the better overall record, but Michigan was the Big 10 champ due to a head to head win. Regardless, back then, at least in the Big 10, you couldn't do back to back appearances in the Rose Bowl and Ohio State went the previous year.
