It is not a figure of speech. It is a malapropism of the idiom “beat him to a pulp.”
It is a misinterpretation because it does not convey a figurative meaning. It is a mistake and not a rhetorical device.

We used to have a guy that made bird sounds. He didn’t do it continually and it was far better than the beat the drum cadence of the vandy prick.
