They list LSU as 34-20, because they only go back to 1984 (they moved up from I-AA in 1983).

That's not correct, the Southland conference moved to 1-AA in football in 1982, before that all their members were Div 1A. USL became an independent at that time in football. There has never been a Div 1-AA in baseball.

I think it's the 24 game discrepancy, actually.

Yes. I remember that period. It was too contentious as they wanted to fight more than play ball.

Guess I didn’t know ULL had a remotely successful baseball history.

USL has changed names so many times, they probably don’t count all the losses because it wasn’t Louisiana.

Since 1981, assuming my counting is correct, they have had 6 losing seasons.

Probably not coincidentally, 1981 was the year former LSU football and baseball player Mel Didier (also a Catholic High of BR alum) took over as the coach of the baseball program for two years, also serving as the AD in 1982.

Didier was well regarded for his ability as a scout, both in spotting talent and in charting pitchers and hitters, as well as player development. He is a really interesting person.

It has Changed 3 times. Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (1898), it became the Southwestern Louisiana Institute (1921), University of Southwestern Louisiana (1960), and finally the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1999. Except the last name change, the change was the result of a change in what the institution was. SLII was a vocational training school with 2-year and, eventually, 4-year curricula. The name was changed to SLI as liberal arts curricula were added. It became USL when it expanded to become a comprehensive university.

LSU has only changed thiers once (or twice, depending on how you look at it) when it changed from the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy to the Louisiana State University in 1870. I guess you could make the case that it changed a second time when it merged with the Agricultural & Mechanical College in 1877 to become the Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College.

Not sure why those details always fascinate me but they do.

like another guy said, there has never been a such thing as 1AA in baseball.
and it didn't exist in football prior to 1978.

so congrats on ignoring everything prior to 1983 thanks to those whopping 5 seasons of existence in 1AA in a completely different sport.

Read the entire thread. It's not about a one game discrepancy. It's about the difference between 58-28 and 34-20.

If Didier had stayed it's possible that ULL might've made it to Omaha sooner than 2000. Helluva coach.
