Posted on 2/15/18 at 8:59 am
Posted on 2/15/18 at 8:59 am
Fri, Feb 16th - 7pm - Alex Box Stadium - SECN+
Sat, Feb 17th - 4pm - Alex Box Stadium - SECN+
Sun, Feb 18th - 11am - Alex Box Stadium - SECN+
Friday - Caleb Gilbert vs Scott Tully - SR LHP
Saturday - Zack Hess vs Tommy Sheehan - FR LHP
Sunday - Todd Peterson vs Cameron Junker - SO RHP
Team site preview: LSU | Notre Dame
Obviously we know that Mainieri was formerly the head coach of Notre Dame.
There are only a handful of players on either roster that participated in the cold, miserable double header in South Bend a couple years ago.
Mainieri essentially reassembling his old ND staff for Team USA this summer: LINK With the added bonus of Trent Forshag as the bullpen coach of Team USA. (Which may give some insight as to how the staff is using the former catcher turned equipment manager now)
Notre Dame Roster: LINK
Friday Game Capsule from Luke Johnson: LINK
Game 1 LSU batting order:
SS Josh Smith
1B Nick Webre
RF Antoine Duplantis
CF Zach Watson
LF Daniel Cabrera
C Bryce Jordan
DH Beau Jordan
3B Jake Slaughter
2B Brandt Broussard

Make sure Coach O isn’t in the bullpen opting to kick a FG inside the one.

I heard that to honor Coach O, Josh Smith is going Sac Bunt to lead off the game.

Notre Dame OF Matt Vierling and 2B Nick Podkul are both ranked in the top 30 at their position according to D1 Baseball. Vierling also pitches from time to time.
Coincidentally, this is the first of two Vierling siblings LSU will face this season. Matt's younger brother Mark is a freshman INF for Mizzou, who LSU plays in March.

On a personal note, I've always despised Notre Dame mainly because of what I perceived to be their "entitlement" mentality.
But two seasons ago when we went to the two-game series in South Bend the Notre Dame people could not have been nicer to me and my daughter. They were effusive in their expressing delight we were there to watch LSU play ND in baseball.
As we were leaving the big cathedral on campus one of the ND employees approached us to just start up a conversation. At one point he asked, "Can I ask you sort of a silly question?"
I said, "Sure."
He said, "What is wrong with those football fans from Alabama?"
It turns out he went to the bama/ND BCS championship game a few years ago and apparently he got his fill of the crudeness that comes from Gumps.
After we swept the double header and as we were walking out of their pitiful little baseball stadium, the ushers were standing at the exits thanking all of the LSU fans for coming.
Damn, I really hated that.....

LSU skull-fricking ND in this series would be a good sign of things to come this summer.
We ended so poorly against ND in football, lets crush those little irish fricks and starts this season with our nuts swinging, baws.
Cheers to warm weather, cold brews and tiger baseball!

Notre Dame's Friday night starter, Scott Tully, has a career WHIP of 1.246. He's struck out 22.5% of batters faced and walked 7.3% of batters faced in his career.
The Saturday starter is a freshman. The Sunday starter is a Sophomore with two thirds of an inning to his name.

Good stuff P!
I wish that Notre Dame write up would have talked about their lineup some but oh well.
It really makes you appreciate the coverage that LSU baseball gets.

All signs point to...
Sweep.
Sweep.

Notre Dame is extremely young this year and most of their upper classmen haven’t played much. If LSU can get into their bullpen Friday it’s gonna be a loooooong weekend for them.

If Cameron Junker isn't a left-hander that throws in the low to mid-80s and produces a game where LSU wins 2-1 (after we win the first two by 5-10 runs each), I'll eat my hat!

He could be right-handed, its just usually those soft-tossing lefty junk ballers that confound our hitters.

This is a random question but I didn’t think it deserved a thread:
Does anyone know where Hess’s fastball was sitting at during the scrimmages? Obviously he’s not gonna throw 97 but was it in the 94-95 range or the 91-93 range?
Not that it really matters as long as it has that nasty break on it, I was just wondering.

Notre Dame clearly recruits athletic bloodlines. Of their three weekend starters, two of their dads played basketball in college and one played football.
Vierling, the previously mentioned OF/P, is the son of a former Kansas football player. Podkul, the 2b, is the son of a former college football and baseball player.
ETA: I've only looked at the bios of 6 players, all six had dads that played college sports.
