Well they had a terrible first handoff and subsequently had a human hurdle, so I can’t exactly say it was their running that was the problem

Was that just expected in the 4x400?

Our 4x400m has been weak compared to the rest of the nation this year. We probably didn't run our A squad so we can rest the guys to run their individual events. The same scenario happened at SECs & Regionals. No sense in making them go all out in an extra race.

Today is day 1 of the women's events. Men have the day off except for decathlon, which LSU doesn't have an athlete entered in.

Big points for the women will be in the 4x100m, 100h, and the 400h which has 3 LSU athletes in the top 8 qualifiers, and pole vault (Lisa Gunnarsson of Sweden!).

Also chances to score well in the 100m, 200m and possibly the 800m if Katy-Ann McDonald runs well.

If you care about local runners, look out for Gabbi Jennings in the 3000m steeplechase. She runs for Furman and was a star for First Baptist in Slidell with 44(!) state titles. She's the favorite for this race and has raced against the pros.

Tonea Marshal in the 100 hurdles.

Symone Mason has 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m so she'll be a major factor into team scoring.

Lisa Gunnarsson won indoor nationals in pole vault but got beat at SEC outdoors this year.

Abby O'Donoghue, Denham's finest, CANNOT choke it this time. Ranked 3rd and needs to bring in a top 3 performance.

Emma Robbins is a stellar freshman hammer thrower who needs to PB to make noise.

We have 3 women in the 400 hurdles that could bring in serious points if most, if not all, do well and qualify for the finals.

Aliyah Whisby ranked 9th in Long Jump so we'll need a PB on that.

I retract this statement.

Talking with my buddy who is one of the coaches on the team. 4x400m was actually a total collapse. Outside of being semi-inconsistent, dudes who were supposed to show up did NOT perform well.

Bad news: record for most points scored at Nationals is out of reach.

Good news: winning a title is very much within reach.

Whats the story on her not winding up at LSU? Or just at Furman in general? Are they some steeplechase powerhouse with a legendary coach or something?

Furman is a distance powerhouse. They don’t really win anything at the national leve but they’re always super competitive and pump out high caliber athletes.

Also nobody that’s good wants to run distance in Louisiana.

Way better coaching at Furman at the time of her signing with them.

It's very hard to recruit distance runners to the South.

I guess the south, especially louisiana is kinda a boring place to long distance run huh? Only so many times you can be inspired running along the levee. And maybe the heat/humidity plays a factor?

It’s literally almost entirely heat/humidity. I ran distance at ULM and early cross country season/late track season training was miserable

Yeah no reason to run Squirrel on that 4x4 if it wasn't a serious attempt.

Ok well, counterpoint, why wouldnt those uncomfortable training conditions make you a better athlete when you compete somewhere else? I guess most people aren't gluttons for punishment if given the option and dont choose to train in those environments? Except for like ultra runners doing badwater and shite.

Is there any place to find the current team scoreboard? I have been searching for it and all I find is a string of articles with individual results

Most top distance programs have amazing training facilities and trails etc. LSU does not. While LSU can certainly put together good squads it will be hard to put together top tier domestic runners in BR. I think Tulane made XC nats back in the 90s but had some foreign kids. US kids just don't want to train in that heat.

Because you can get the same benefits through things like training at altitude. Also there’s a certain point where you’re likely hurting yourself more by training in those conditions instead of being somewhere where you could truly run your best more frequently

Did Noah Williams pull anything? If not, why didn’t he run? Does Shaver realize one dropped baton like what happened before can cost a championship like before? I think he does. There is more to the Williams story than we know. If he has a pull or anything, that is huge from a points perspective.

LSU might’ve ran a “B squad” trying to save Noah knowing it didn’t really matter
