CP likes pressure and the end result is sacks, tfls, and ints. It is a double-edged sword as we all know to well. But he does get teams off the field on 3rd down if he has the personnel to do it with. I'm not sure he's a good recruiter let alone great recruiter so that, IMO, is why Orgeron would be so pivitol to offset that.
Btw, NCAA Total Def rankings from the NCAA site are:
2010 #18
2011 #25
2012 #93 (This makes me wonder about recruiting)
2013 ?? - not provided on NCAA stie (1 year at USC when Kiffin was fired; same season Orgeron finished 6-2 as interim HC)

We need some sacks I don't remember the last time I saw one from LSU

mytigger LSU Reaches out to Clancy Pendergast Update 1/2 2:58PM Coach CP front runner DC That's true Ace, but during CP's tenure in there the same conference had multiple Top 25 national defenses every year in Stanford, Oregon, Utah or Oregon State.
Ok. What were the TOP for each of those team and what was Cal's of possession? Was the Cal's defense left on the field due to the offenses inability to keep the ball (or the offensive scheme scored fast meaning more minutes for the defense)?
The point I am making is all the other factor add up to a good hire. The guy has a certain amount of respect in the Pro and college circles. He is a film rat and a workaholic. Not married and relatively young. Not sure of recruiting ability. He has big-time DC experience. Seen various spread offenses and coached against them. Known for game day adjustments. Turned around USC defense, transforming it from a 4-3 under under Monty Kiffin to a 3-4 under one gap defense. He has momentum on his side.
Now, just on background, this is Saban-like when Nick came from Mich St to LSU. Not a great record, but big rep, ability to coach, and learned his trade in the big leagues and brought that experience with him.
I am ok with this hire. I am very happy if Coach O comes along. I think it is a scary team along with the rest of the def assist coaches. Recruiting would get even better over all. I am not trilled with the 3-4 under, but I think CP is smart enough to figure out what is best. His Psycho front alone with our secondary might be cool to watch, in a good way.

Orgeron would also be important to provide that pressure without having to resort to an over-reliance on blitzing. If a team can get good pressure with a 4-man rush, it makes it very hard on passing offenses. Haley just hasn't gotten that done.

I'm concerned as to how all this is going to work - do we add a coach? Do we lose Raymond if Pendergast coaches the DBs? Do we have to shift a coach slot (i.e.Ensminger to football operations/player personnel, etc.) from offense to defense?
I've heard a lot of scenarios - and another thing - how are O and Frank going to work together? I suspect Wilson will take a HC job after next season, so it might be smart to have a recruiting coordinator in the wings, but we have to finish the 2015 and do most of the work for 2016 before that transition happens.

It's all supposition at this point. Somebody mentioned that they are increasing by one the number of coaches allowed this coming spring. So perhaps they would give O a recruiting-only position for now, then he would become DL coach later. Brick would move to LB coach, presumably.

Raymond and Henry are two assistants we absolutely can not afford to lose, Coach O or not. Complete coaches- recruiting train and field.
Bottom line is if LSU wants Coach O, Haley becomes expendable. Extension or no extension.
Miles will resist letting him go without a job-in-waiting. Except for Stud, I think in almost every case he has done that and is loyal to them. But, Haley is being sought and the AFCA starts soon. It's a perfect opportunity to get things lined out and a place to go.

Thanks. Any word on what the holdup might be on announcing Pendergast? I think Les can manage our final recruiting drive without a DC (Chavis didn't contribute much in that department) but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have the staff firmed up well ahead of NSD.

we absolutely need a DC to finish out recruiting. Just lost Phillips and can't help but wonder if we had a DC hire if he'd be at LSU. Maybe not, but we'll never know.

This. Miles may be a hell of a recruiter but he has to have a defensive staff that he can sell to these kids.

Exactly, his defense got worse EVERY year at Cal. His defense at USC gave up 21+ ppg.
with Cal for example you have to consider their academic requirements, you currently need a 3.0 high school GPA to even qualify. suffice to say theyre not getting players like Cardale Jones, who aint come to Ohio State to play school.
with USC you need to consider the sanctions at the time and the offenses they faced. chavis gave up 17.5 ppg this year, and that was with bama and clanga being the only top 20 offenses LSU faced (they were tied at 17th).
I posted a few of these before but, if it helps, Ill just show you what actual USC fans on reddit think abut him ( here and here )
Pendergast is a great DC. We thought we'd be getting something better with Wilcox but I think most USC fans would agree we'd rather have Pendergast back.
Good pick up, Tigers. Clancy got kind of jobbed here last season. He's a damn good coach.
God the hybrid package he ran was incredible.
this is a great move if they can get him.
NOOOOOO PLEASE I WANT HIM BACK, I DON'T KNOW HOW WE COULD POSSIBLY GET HIM BACK, BUT I WANT HIM BACK
sark must be dumber than i thought for letting such a kingpin go.
I just want him back. Screw Wilcox, I want Pendergast.
and in response to what his weaknesses might be:
Hates recruiting. Knows his X's and O's and is great at making in game adjustments, but if there's one thing he doesn't like, it's definitely recruiting.
He's amazing. In terms of weaknesses, aside from the already mentioned recruiting issues, I would say he's good for 1-2 brain fart games per season. Look at our game against ASU last season, for example. His defense got totally rolled and looked unprepared. If you can live with one bad game, however, he's tremendous the rest of the time.

Play school?? My god, some of these guys need to learn to keep their mouths shut

Posted on 1/3/15 at 2:11 pm to Will2nd
This is the most important point. Think about when our defense was most successful. 2001-2004. We had tons of blitzing and our CBs could handle the coverages. We have longed for that pressure since it left with Muschamp/Saban.
Pendergast would bring it back and our secondaries are drastically better and more capable now. I think CP would be the best hire for LSU for that reason. Couple that with his experience in handling spread attacks with lesser defensive talent than LSU traditionally has and you have a home run.

Scarborough just posted Saturday DC rumblings on twitter. It's premium so I have no idea what it says.
