I seldom tire of LSU baseball. One of our great comebacks was in the bottom of the 9th vs Long Beach State.

We were down 3-5 heading into the B9. And then we did what we do. Enjoy.

LB coach left the pitcher in too long and pitched to LSUs best hitter. I couldn’t imagine the flack that an LSU Coach would have gotten with those 2 gambles.

He didn’t leave he pitcher on too long, that was their All American closer.
The debated decision was his decision to walk Russ Johnson, a right handed batter, to pitch to Todd Walker with the lefty vs lefty matchup.

That game was so wild. Long Beach State scored 2 runs in the top of the 9th to take that 5-3 lead. Armando Rios had an error in centerfield that inning. In the bottom of nine, Rios made up for it at the plate.

LSU won with 5 errors and LBS had 9 hits. Crazy.

Yeah looking back its crazy to think they elected to pitch to walker. But part of that is his local reputation. At that time, doing the lefty lefty matchup made sense i guess. I prob still wouldve loaded the bases for berrios

Also intentionally walking puts the double play into possibility to end the inning. They really had no choice.

Thanks for posting op. Great to relive that inning.

Fullerton is more than legit. They’ve been to the CWS the same number of times as LSU and won four national championships. They are in the legendary status with USC and LSU.

And LBS had gone 1-17 with RISP. We were a team of destiny that year. Love Mike Patrick’s call and old-school ESPN graphics (no ticker). Armando Rios was the man that game!

There are always exceptions to rules. Pitching to Todd Walker in that situation is an exception for me. You are just asking for trouble.

Armando Rios was a clutch hitter and Todd Walker was a great one.

That was the right call. He should have walked Walker too tho to load em up.

Ahh the good old days of LSU baseball. Sure wish we had some memories like this in the past decade.
