Again: If ... this much change can produce a contender. First-year head coach Brian Kelly could start around five transfers on offense (including QB) and six on defense (including the entire secondary). New blood was a must for a team that slipped dramatically after its 2019 national title, but how long does it take for that many new players to jell?
If ... (stop me if you've heard this before) a star quarterback emerges. Veteran Myles Brennan (injured for most of two seasons), scramble-heavy Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels and recent blue-chippers Garrett Nussmeier and Walker Howard are all potential starters. Someone (probably Daniels) has to shine immediately against a relentless schedule.
If ... the skill corps is more than just Kayshon Boutte. A healthy Boutte is one of the best receivers in FBS, but he'll need help from players like Jaray Jenkins, Jack Bech and whoever starts at RB.
If ... a brand-new secondary is as good as it looks. Transfer corners Jarrick Bernard-Converse (Oklahoma State), Sevyn Banks (Ohio State) and Mekhi Garner (Louisiana) and Arkansas safeties Joe Foucha and Greg Brooks Jr. have all flashed elite potential, but only two have played with each other before.
If ... the run defense grows more consistent. Linemen BJ Ojulari, Jaquelin Roy and Maason Smith are proven playmakers, but with them LSU still ranked just 70th in rushing success rate allowed in 2021

It's easy to see why the national and regional medias are all sleeping on LSU. Indeed, it's because they are all incredibly ignorant with respect to LSU.

Only on TD do LSU fans hate ESPN smh

Don't hate ESPN, just tired of the double standard BS that comes out their mouths...Maybe if they shut up and stuck to sports they would actually be able to see the true + & -s of each team. Good thing I have TLK with Josh, he'll tell me straight if LSU sucks and have actual facts to point towards rather than "ho hum I can't believe Kelly left ND for LSU of all places! And USC is now going to be a powerhouse again cause of Riley He's not scared just needed better resources!"

The fact that those "Ifs" didn't include and preferably start with a young and inexperienced OL coming together makes the whole thing worthless.

Missed a big if IMO...o line has to play much, much better than past 2 seasons.

At this point only ONE of the OL starters will be young and inexperienced.

The defensive line will make the secondary look better than they probably are. LB play will determine how far this defense will take this team.
The Oline will be better and there are playmakers so get it out in 3 seconds or less and every once in a while stretch the field will allow the run game to get going. That is the key to staying in games for this team. Strong run game and strong defensive line play to allow other positions have better stats than they would normally.
I worry about teams with good TEs fast slot receivers with pass catching RBs beating up the LBs.

Nah, lots of people hate ESPN now. Ever since they decided to become woke politically & chased off a lot of their really solid on air talent they have become very difficult to watch.

If I didn’t follow LSU’s recruiting, players that did not get to play much because of injuries, redshirts, portal, etc. I’d probably be sleeping on them a little too. We had under 40 players available for our bowl game, a WR playing QB, and that’s what the nation remembers last. That and we had about 10 men get drafted to the league. At a quick glance to the non LSU fan we appear to be in a complete rebuild personnel wise and factor in an entire new coaching staff. When I scan down our roster though we have a lot of talent that people aren’t aware of yet. On paper for people that really know our roster we have the potential pieces to surprise a lot of people. We just need to avoid a rash of injuries and just get it done. Competent coaching across the board will obviously help matters. I’ll be on LSU minus the points versus FSU. I think we win more games than oddsmakers think. I’d wager on the over on that one.
