yes , Woody is a one trick poney. Throw as much cash as possible to get the biggest name coach......not the best but the most expensive. He somehow thinks this makes his really successful. It is actually just the opposite and his Jimbo and Kelly hires should be more than enough to prove this to most. But somehow at LSU it isn't.

Somebody actually gets the point of the thread.
It was NOT about bashing Miles.

Cholly Mac had a number of fine seasons, though he had problems beating Bear Bryant and early on Johnny Vaught, and never ran the table any season. But his teams always played solid football and defense ruled during his entire coaching tenure. I think the five-season stretch from 1969 to 1973 produced some of the most memorable football in LSU history.
That being said, he kind of overstayed his welcome. His last six teams, from 1974 to 1979, were 5-5-1, 4-7, 6-4-1, 8-4, 8-4, 7-5. That prolonged level of mediocrity would never fly nowadays, esp. at a Tier 1 program like LSU.

I'm still touting Paul Dietzel. His immeasurable value as a coach extends well beyond his win/loss record--
The traditions: • Mike The Tiger
• Traditional gold-white-gold uniform for home games
• Chinese Bandits, and the traditional music played by the band following defensive stops
• I believe the field pattern of numbers every 5 yards also began during the Dietzel Era
Also, don't forget he came back to LSU as AD in 1978.

Maybe so, but what he achieved at LSU was great.

Les Miles was pretty damn great here for a long time.
It’s sad that the ending will tarnish the career.

This is indeed an immeasurable contribution.

'd put him as a good hire and a decent to good coach.
We wasn't a great football coach.
I disagree. From 2005-2012 other than Saban and maybe Meyer, there wasn't a better coach or program in the country. Miles was elite for 7-8 years. Sure he made some boneheaded gameday decisions but during those years there was never a game that I thought we couldn't win and rarely a game where we were completely dominated. Maybe a few games in 2008 where our Co-DC Malveto experiment went horribly but other than that we were consistently ranked in the top 10 year in and year out.

He wasn’t a great coach, but he did take LSU to two National Titles, won 1, and won 114 games for a .770 win percentage. That would be 100 other schools greatest coach ever.
Based on those numbers, that’s our greatest coach of all time. I don’t think many people believe he is the greatest(including me), but if you say those #s would make him the greatest at 100 other schools, they’re also the greatest #s at LSU.

Landry IS going to make the hire

Don't forget that as athletic director, CPD presided over the greatest 4 year stretch of basketball in LSU history: 1977-78 to 1980-81. That included two SEC regular-season championship, one SEC tourney championship (the only one in the school's history), three Sweet Sixteens, two Elite Eights, one Final Four, and no worse than 12-6 in SEC play any of those years. Folks, the PMAC was rocking!

Dietzel was the greatest football coach before Saban. The outrage that erupted when he announced he was leaving for Army West Point was a thing of legends.
It’s a shame that Bo Rein was killed during a recruiting visit, he may have been one of the best.
