Theoretically, LSU should have an advantage in that they have to have these games and the other teams, most of them do not. They are looking to get guys work to prepare for the regional. LSU, in theory, should be grinding every pitch in every at bat.

This may be the definition of overthinking it.

The only application of this theory really has to do with pitching. It's not like a guy is going to go to the plate and change his approach in that individual at bat just because he knows his team doesn't have to win to reach the NCAA Tournament. He's going to grind out that at bat just as he would any other AB.

Where LSU may have an advantage is they have chosen to go with their top two starting pitchers in the first two games (assuming LSU wins game 1) whereas their opponents don't feel the need to throw their top starters on short(er) rest. Also, if LSU does advance to the third game the opponent there (at top 4 seed) probably will have a different approach to their pitching even if they do start their No. 1 guy. LSU did that last year. Anderson started in LSU's first game of the tournament vs. A&M. Yet, despite it being a tie game in the 6th and Anderson having thrown only 84 pitches, he was pulled from the game. Eyanson was inserted to throw 3 innings to close out the game. LSU purposely used their top 2 guys at less than usual capacity with an eye more towards the following week than winning the SECT

That's LSU's hope. That they will have the starting pitching advantage in Games 1 and 2 which will be enough to get them to games 3 and 4 where the opponent is not likely to use their top pitchers at full capacity

LSU had top 8 odds to make the CWS until the day Jay said we were out of the tournament.

I actually was thinking about this a little this morning. How many late-night walk-offs did Jared Jones have last season? We haven't had many of those moments this season.
