Here is an excerpt from Peter Finney's The Fighting Tigers about the 1955 search for a new head coach after Gaynell Tinsley was fired. Most of you will recognize some of the names, but you may not have heard of Stan Galloway. He was the Billy Napier of his day having made Southeastern a small college powerhouse in the 1950s.

No lesson here for today's search, just an interesting trip down memory lane.

Interesting read.

Bear Bryant was interested and we didn't grab him - what could have been. A few short years later he goes to Alabama.

What happened in the NFL in 1954 that no coaches or players from that year in the NFL would be considered?

Back in the days (as recently as the 70's), you never hired a coach from another SEC school. Also, before that, you never hired a head coach that was already under contract at a school. Professional courtesy.

Can’t say Dietzel was a bad choice… but damn if he didn’t leave could’ve done a LOT of great things. Super interesting that we could have gotten Bear.

Bear was at A&M then, not Alabama.

Using those criteria today would leave a really short list.

Chris Petersen and ?

This should instruct us, but it's difficult to see how.

Wasn't Cholly Mac a Dietzel assistant? It must have been a specific rule for that staff.

Yes. He was the number one assistant to Dietzel, in today's world he would probably have the title, "Defensive Coordinator". About the time Dietzel left after the 61 season, Cholly Mac was offered head coaching jobs at Kentucky and LSU.

Sadly Dietzel made a big mistake leaving LSU for Army.

Dietzel said that leaving LSU was one of the hardest decisions he ever made.

"I think the way you measure my move is 'Was LSU better when I left than when I came in?'" Dietzel said. "It was tough leaving. I never considered going anywhere else because I thought LSU was the best coaching job in America. I loved the LSU fans. They are crazy and passionate about it. I had never considered West Point because they had never had a non-graduate coach. When they came around and asked me if I would be interested, it opened a door I thought would never be opened." However, he was not able to match the success he had at LSU, compiling a record of 21–18–1 at Army.

I was a junior at LSU when Dietzel packed up and left - he later said his final team at LSU, the 1961 Tigers, was the best team he ever coached.

Having grown up so close to SLU and have heard old timers talk about Galloway. I think LSU would have done real good under him.

We lived in the married student housing at SLC in the early 50s during Galloway's tenure while my dad attended college on the GI Bill. Galloway coached at Bogalusa and led the team to a state championship and was hired by SLC in 1951.

I had the pleasure of watching the team practice across from our apartment. Galloway was a master, and when head coaching jobs opened up his name was usually in the hopper, but he never moved on from Southeastern coaching there for 14 years.

Orgeron would’ve been excluded based on the first point.
