Thanks for the link. I'm really excited to see the reports on all the new pitchers as fall ball goes forward.
I really think we're going to spread innings out much more than we have in the past. I think it will be a combination of the guys that have the stamina to eat innings won't have the stuff, but the guys with the stuff won't be pushed to eat innings. So we'll see a ton of guys throwing 30-60 innings.

I agree. I like what I'm hearing about Cabrera.
quote:
The interesting wrinkle in this competition is Cabrera’s prospects of playing a role on the mound. The lefty could work his way into the pitching plans if he continues to throws strike at the rate he has in early bullpen sessions.
quote:
“I think he’s gotten a real good chance to be an everyday player, but through two bullpens, I’m telling you nothing but strikes at 88 mph with a good changeup and breaking ball,” Mainieri said. “So he looks like somebody that could fill a role for us.”

LSU Rivals had a nice writeup too.
Duplantis back to RF
Watson remains in CF (he's draft eligible soph)
LF will be between Jordan Cabrera and Webre
3B will be Slaughter
SS Smith
2b Broussard
1B several
C Feduccia or Doolittle
Fontenot and Hilliard are two pitchers that have impressed in individual workouts

I'll be taking my purple notebook to the Box Sunday and will post a summary of practice that night. Also looking forward to checking out the newbies.

Does 2016-17 supplant 2007-08 as Mainieri's greatest coaching job at LSU?

Baseball America recently released a couple of top 50 draft prospect lists, college and HS respectively.
Zach Watson (15) and Zack Hess (36) are the current players listed. College top 50
The HS list had a few commits: LINK

RHP Ma’Khail Hilliard: “He throws a lot of strikes and he’s got a real confident demeanor out there on the mound. But he has a curveball; let me just put it this way: the RPM spin rate on a curveball, the highest in the Big Leagues is 3490. This kid threw a curveball the other day at 3410 spin rate that we’ve never seen on our machine.
Nice

For those interested, the Tigers' first fall practice is this Sunday, 10/1, at 3 PM.
All practices are free and open to the public.
Practices usually last about 2.5 to 3.0 hours.

INF Hal Hughes: “He can really play shortstop. When you watch him take fungos, you’re pretty sure that he’s got what it takes. I want to see what we have there. But just as I told him, just because you’re playing shortstop in the scrimmages, it doesn’t mean you’re now competing for the starting job at second base.”
Can anyone shed light on what this means? Is it a typo on the quote maybe or is Mainieri saying that he isn't up for second base?

I'm told that in the individual workouts Storz hits the ball an absolute mile.
Whether that translates into anything in the scrimmages I have no idea, but they're really impressed with his power. As in he might have more potential than Deichmann.

I assumed it was a typo. I think "now" should read "not".

Storz very well may
I still don’t know if I like Hess as a starter but the need for starting pitching is there
I wonder how he’s looking

Damn, I didn’t expect that.

I agree with the typo theory. Who ever plays SS for the second team during the scrimmages sometimes gets to start at 2nd or 3rd base during the season as Smith did last year.

I haven't seen it posted anywhere, but news came out yesterday that Storz is having surgery to remove a bone spur in his shoulder. He will be out until late March or April. He will not be redshirting and is not expected to bat during his recovery either.
Also, for those not already following it, the LSU Baseball Data twitter account was tweeting out exit velocities from yesterday. Watson had one around 106mph, which helps explain his lofty prospect rating by both Baseball America and D1 Baseball.
