Part of it is LSU's fault. The Board of Directors specified a certain amount has to go back to academics every year, after 2011. Since then, no BCS bowls, no playoff spots. This "every little bit helps" sentiment is typical of our last governor's pandering. We're talking about losing 700 million in cuts vs athletics giving 15 million a year. It's a different order of magnitude, saying that athletics is helping the school stay afloat financially is like saying the "sand berms" stopped the oil spill. It's a bad strategy for the athletic department and even worse to think that it's helping LSU in the long term. Legislature needs to step up, make unpopular decisions and fund the school properly. They have to raise taxes and/or stop giving away all the state's money to private corporations. And some of the LSU Board has to go as soon as they can be removed. LSU is in very bad financial shape.

Louisiana needs to re-write its GD constitution. Every program under the sun is "locked" so it can't be touched when there is a budget shortfall except academics. That's why every single time the state needs money, they cut higher education. It's utterly ridiculous that we do this while expecting our state to magically get better.
