LSU-Arkansas and "The Golden Boot"--A Phony, Manufactured Rivalry

Arkansas is not our "rival."
Some PR firm came up with the "Golden Boot" in 1996 in an attempt to manufacture a rivalry where there was none.
Rivalries and trophies are born out of small things that become tradition.
Michigan and Minnesota's "Little Brown Jug," for instance--in 1903, Fielding Yost brought his "point-a-minute" Wolverine offense to Minneapolis. (I wish Les Miles would emulate Yost instead of Schembechler.) He was suspicious of Minnesota perhaps doctoring Michigan's water and sent a trainer out to buy a water jug for 30 cents. After losing the game, Michigan left the jug behind in the visitors' locker room.
A Scandinavian janitor told the Minnesota coach: "Yost left his yug." A Minnesota student painted the jug in Gopher colors with the game score, and a tradition was born--spontaneously, not manufactured.
LSU tradition is Ruffin Pleasant going to buy Mardi Gras ribbon before catching the train to play Tulane--he wanted a purple, green, and gold swatch on his jersey. Alas, the store was out of green ribbon and he could only get ... purple and gold.
What kind of uniforms would we be wearing if the fabric shop had been out of purple ribbon instead of green over 100 years ago?
That's tradition. It's spontaneous and grows from small, seemingly inconsequential beginnings--not some phony manufactured big-arse trophy--"Hey! We'll increase the TV ratings because now we have a rivalry!"
Don't misunderstand me. I hate these Arky fans probably second to gump fans--but not because I think they are our "big" rival because some people thought it would be a good idea.
Rivalries and the trophies and traditions that go with them are born--they are not made in some public relations office.

Has there been any LSU fans who thought otherwise? I literally know of ZERO LSU fans who see Arkansas as a "rival"

Then you have Ole Miss, who IS a natural rival, but is also being forced on us with the "Magnolia Bowl"

I totally agree! Real rival Old Piss!!!!!

4-4 since 2007. We are also on our 4th coach during that time frame...Only John L didn't get a win and it went to the final play of the game to decide.
Rivalry or not, If I was a fan of LSU I would be questioning our leaders

Yes. Yes. A million times yes. Ar-Kansas is irrelevant to us. They are beneath us. They look up to us like a puppy to a big dog.
We need, after we beat them, to leave that trophy on the field and prepare for next week.

why is 2007 the stopping point? because it's convenient?
why not just Miles at LSU vs Arkansas dating back to 2005 is 6-4... about to be 7-4

no...just more relevant.
Nutt going out the door in 2007
Petrino in 2008-2011
John L 2012
Bert 2013-present
Also...that time frame was pointed out in another thread by an LSU fan. Says a lot actually

record regardless, Arkansas is an afterthought of the SEC and we forget we even play you every year until November rolls around. Just the way it is man.
I respect the hell out of the program though. I never underestimate you guys. You've given us fits every year. Play us tough no matter what your season is looking like.

perhaps we need to win more than 50% before we totally ignore them. Yes they are about as exciting as Vandy, but we need to start beating their brains in and winning more of these games.

Having said all that you said, I do already miss the Friday-after-Thanksgiving Arkansas game (although I don't miss playing half the time in that disgusting War Memorial Stadium).

yet embraced by Arkansas players and fans.
they hate LSU almost as much as they hate Tejas

The whole "We're not really rivals" thing is getting really old. Every SEC game is a rivalry that gives a team at least a year of bragging rights.
Rival- a person or thing that tries to defeat or be more successful than another
We are rivals by the definition of the word.

They are OUR MOST NATURAL RIVAL in the SEC. They are a border state along the Mississippi river. Texas A&M has Texas. Ole Miss has Mississippi. Auburn and Bama have each other.
That leaves LSU VS ARKANSAS.
for anyone who says they are beneath us, why have they been kicking our arse every other year?
YOU PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY AREN'T OUR RIVAL ARE DOPES!

well could have been but in the wrong division and
we had them first. Maybe they can be rivals with Texas A&M if they want
(do they play each other every year as the permanent cross division game opponent?)
plus they don't have a golden boot to play for

as of last year...Another "created" rivalry that will hardly ever decide a division.
Tomorrow's game could ultimately decide the SEC West Champ
