I know that. Í also know that portions of the athletic budget surplus is kicked back to the school. Thats is a fact. The more revenue the athletic department enjoys, the greater the potential return to the university can be. Once again, you are naive if you think all of this money goes to trash clean up or even the athletic department for that matter.

I'm aware of the 5% auxillary fee Athletics kicks back to academics.
I'm aware Athletics will now be paying for cox academic center, its tutors, and some music instructor salaries. These services will cost an additional 1.4M.

How much money is this supposed to generate? Maybe 3-4k cars at most? Figure 40 average between trÀilers anÐ Hayfield lots. 160k per game. 960k over the 2011 season? That still does not come close to LSU's lost revenue for one less home game than normal. People need to quit their bitching!!!

tailgating will still be largely unaffected
I know you really want to be right, but I can't see how that could possibly be true.
I'm a member of a group that puts together a tailgate and we are trying to figure out how it makes sense to continue.
We spend on average about $500 / game. We invite people out...many who don't go to games. The concensus has been that a significant number of our guests won't come out due to the decreased parking around campus.
For example, there are 8 of us. 7 of us who normally park on campus would no longer do so. Additionaly, all of our wives / girlfriends who normally come to campus later and park by us will now be parking in the free area as well. In our fairly small tailgate, that 10-15 cars on average that will now be parking in one of the free areas. Needless to say, parking will be scarce for the normal guest unwilling to pay $40 per game.
To add to that, many of us bring our kids out to tailgate even if they don't go to the game...that's going to be impossible to do due to the limited parking.
So, not only will it be more expensive, but it will be much less convenient (dealbreaker), and will likely limit the size of the crowd we will get (which is why we do it in the first place).
I guess we'll have to see how it works out, but by the way you are talking I'd say you aren't a part of a group that puts on a tailgate.

LSU Is undegoing cuts as a university. The chancellor, much like any CEO worth a damn, is going to look for ways to increase revenue and decrease cost. What better way to increase revenue than to locate an untapped revenue stream such as the abundant free parking on LSU's campus for football games?
The United States is in debt to their ears. China owns us. They are looking for ways to increase revenue and decrease cost. They pass health care and say this will decrease cost. What better way to increase revenue than to let the Bush tax cuts expire.
Where does the money come from? Tax payers pockets. Are tax payers getting raises to cover it? No. What will happen? Tax payers will decrease spending. And the spiral goes on and on. If you think this will not affect total revenues, you are on something. LSU has now just tipped the balance with its total dishonesty about the parking. It will come to haunt them.
Sure the plan is to prop up the academic shortfalls, but they are not shortfalls. The university does not act like a business, just look at the budgets and look at the ratings. More money does not mean better quality. They could get contributions from more alumni like me, but I refuse to do it because of their lack of fiscal discipline. I have watched this since 1978 and it gets worse, thus they won't get a penny from me.
Again, go get em Bobby

The Federal Goverment is a terrible comparison. If LSU raises fees, there is a high likelihood that the money will come from other pools of peronal money, maybe a TV fund. In the Federal example, almost all money comes from some other area of GDP, hence the problem with the comparison.

40 bucks is a bit much and its going to back up the traffic much more. What happens when someone doesn't have enough money and traffic is one way or you have to turn them around?

I am a Chemical Engineer. There is a fact at play in both, irregardless of the complexity.
Input = Output + Accumulation
No way to get around it. Not even by printing money. If the money coming in the pocket goes lower, either the output will go lower or the accumulation (savings) will go lower. When there is no accumulation, guess what. Would I personally lower my 401K, other savings, vacations, gifts to deserving charities, my Direct TV to pay to park. NO WAY.
Federal Government, LSU, Microsoft, Personal Finances. Its all the same. Its a simple material balance.

The new parking fees suck, glad I live within walking distance.

I just think 90 bucks to show up (and thats what it would be in our current spot) is too much money.
Truth be told I really dont give a damn, just recently found out we having another kid and next year's home schedule sucks anyways.
Fla and AU only two home games Im plan on making it to.

"The self-righteous nature of most in this thread is appalling. LSU owes you nothing. If you do not want to pay, park somewhere else. If you will not go to the games, someone else will. If the $120 will put you over the edge next year, you were not going to make it anyway and LSU games should be the least of your concern. Everyone is bitching about their wife or kids or grandparents or buddies not being able to just drive up and tailgate. They feel as though it is a tradition and LSU is stealing it from them. I say this - If your buddy/wife/kids/grandpa will not pay $20 to spend the afternoon tailgating and drinking and partying with friends, then said person was not having as much fun as you thought. To be frank, your tailgate was not worth $20 to them. I know your ego hurts when you read something like that, but you will get over it and continue coming to games and paying the money. If you don't, there is a line of people waiting to take your place who also think they are Mr. Stud Tailgater, yet they are obviously not as self-righteous as you are, so LSU will be better off anyway! /rant."

Eh, people will still tailgate, but that number will be down. Especially given our slate of home games next year, and a number of long road trips in 2011.
Getting the numbers down is NOT a bad thing. Tailgating has gotten WAY TOO BIG. NO ONE NEEDS 2 travel trailers just to tailgate ! The party has gotten bigger than the game. I'll be GLAD some people stop coming. The hell with people who just come to tailgate, I don't give a damn about them. There is not enough room to park anymore, way too many car. This will turn out to be a good thing. BTW, I have a parking pass, as I saw this coming a few years ago.

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but this is the best post I've seen on the situation since the changes were announced.

If someone doesn't have enough money, they should know that before they get in a line to enter a parking lot.

Just wait. You live in Louisiana.
I bet the first game will have cars all the way to the bridge 5 minutes into the first qtr.
