LSU IS A FOOTBALL SCHOOL, A BASEBALL SCHOOL, AND SOON TO BE A BASKETBALL SCHOOL....and add in Womens BB, mens and women Track, womens softball and gymnastics......
LSU IS AN ALL AROUND OUTSTANDING SPORTS PROGRAM!
A DIFFERENT CHAMPIONSHIP FOR A DIFFERENT SEASON!

What has defined Louisville sports success? Basketball. A BCS bowl berth or CWS appearance doesn't change that.
The difference is that LSU isn't just sometimes making an appearance in the CWS, we have 5 championships and regular success well into the post-season. Football has 3 championships and also is regularly one of the top programs in the country.
Comparing that to an occasional BCS berth or CWS appearance is not the same thing.

Yeah, and during that incredible baseball run I was fond of saying that I'd take an SEC title in football over a baseball NC any time. I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt that way.
LSU is a football school.

Are we not allowed to be a school that just supports the athletics of the university?

LSU is a football school.
This is correct. LSU is a football school. Has always been and will always be. Anybody who doesn't understand this is not that educated in the world of college sports. Baseball and basketball pass the time until football season starts.
To put it in the proper perspective, say LSU was told that it could only keep 1 sport. It had to drop all others. Which sport do you think LSU would keep? Say Duke was asked that same question? Say Cal State was asked the same?

Depends on when you were born really... I was born in 1984 and I've always known LSU for its baseball... Now if you were born in the 50's, it's prolly more of a football school... but from 1984-2000 LSU baseball is what made LSU.

Touche'
But I still love LSU Baseball just as equally as Football.

No, depending on when you were born might be what YOU know LSU for. But it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that LSU is a football school.

No, it's a football school because it's a football school to the university and the state.

One of the most ridiculous things I've read on this board.

There's no "prolly" about it and it doesn't matter when you were born. LSU is a football school, period. I don't understand why it's even up for debate.

True in a way...I went to LSU from 79-83, used to get into baseball games with my student ID, sit behind home plate, and STUDY. I'd look up when I heard the crack of a bat, along with the other couple of HUNDRED fans...Born in 84 or after all you've ever known is success-I was raised on .500 ball.

Uh...2 BCS National Championships, several SEC championships...I think Football may be in there somewhere...

how about during baseball season we are a baseball school and during football season we are a football school.....
Posted on 6/2/09 at 11:44 am to parrotdr
As long as LSU football pays the bulk of the 44 million dollar annual budget, LSU is a football school.
I hope that all sports at LSU do well. That is in everyone's best interest to do so.
But, let's not fool ourselves. It is never smart to kill or even torment the goose that lays the golden egg.

Really? How stupid of me to leave those NC's out from 1984-2000.
And how is that ridiculous? If LSU was established in 1983, do you not think it would be considered a Baseball school? I'll admit, recently the tides have turned and it is pretty much an all out Football school, but from 1984-2000 LSU baseball ran LSU sports... and you're an idiot if you think otherwise. And I didn't mean it made LSU what it is today, I meant during the 80's and 90's LSU baseball was what LSU was known for.

Because it isn't true. I love LSU. I love LSU baseball. I will be watching and pulling for LSU in the super and hopefully in the CWS. And LSU has more baseball fans than the rest of the college baseball world. But none of that makes us a baseball school, even as our players are dogpiling on the mound in Omaha after winning our 6th championship, we're still a football school.

LSU is an academic school that has top notch research facilities. It also has an excellent fan base and supports all of its' athletes with excellent educational and sports facilities. This is why it's known as one of the premier campuses in the country for almost any event even tailgaiting. The fact that is has won multiple national championships in almost all major athletic sports prooves that it is known as a multi sport school similar to Florida.

Isn't that what I said?
Let me repeat myself... "I was born in 1984 and I've always known LSU for its baseball."
And if you are referring to me thinking everyone thinks like me, don't be dumb... I know most people think differently and immediately say LSU is a football program. I was just giving my opinion.

Exactly. It's not about championships. UNC Women's Soccer team has won basically 3/4 of the championships in the past 20 years, including almost every one in the 1990s. But do you really think UNC considers itself a womens soccer school? Of course not. It's about fan base, money, and perception of identity.
1) Fan base:
Do you really think if they found a way to host an LSU baseball game in Tiger Stadium (or some fictional venue), they'd drawn 91,000 fans to every game? Of course not. There's a reason that when the new Box was built, it was designed to seat around 10K, and not 90K. Believe me, if the Athletic Dept felt it could sell 90,000 seats a game, they'd have built a massive, Major League-sized stadium. Contrast this with football, where every game is a sellout and good tickets to the Florida, Georgia, or Tennessee games can be scalped for $500+.
2) Money:
It's been pointed out that football brings in the bulk of the Athletic Dept's $44M budget. 'Nuff said. Money talks.
3) Perception of Identity:
Since baseball enjoys only a cult, regional following throughout the nation, the bulk of the country's sports fans have no idea that LSU is any good at baseball. Most sports fans have a pretty good idea that LSU is a major force in college football. Most sports fans, however, cannot name the dominant powers of college baseball. In fact, I bet the average sports fan, even most hard-core sports fans, can't tell you who the reigning CWS series champion is, much less who the big name teams are.

Negative. LSU wasn't established in 1983, first of all. You don't get to change the date of the establishment of the university. You do realize that we won the SEC in 88, right? As bad of a team LSU may have fielded during the early 90s, football was still king. Even in the early 90s TS was packed, near sell outs. And to say that LSU baseball ran all sports is wrong. I will give you the fact that LSU baseball is one of the only programs in the nation to actually make a few dollars, but I promise that football is what ran LSU.
