I've heard this from a few people also..
But what does the temperature have to do with it? I thought it was just the wind direction?

2 words: Density Altitude.

Simply put, as the temperature increases, the number of air molecules per square foot decreases. Translation, drag (resistance) decreases proportionally. Ball travels further as it maintains its speed longer.
