FWIW a guy I know played under Tepper and said it was unfair of the criticism because he was a good coach, but the players Dinardo got were too dumb to comprehend the plays. Or do simple math... Just some info

TM7 could have made Tepper's defense work.

Tepper was dumb enough to say that it would take three years to install all of the elements of his defense.

No, you are being kind. He said FIVE years to install all of the elements of his defense. As soon as I read that I thought "We're fricked."

Be that as it may, the coach' s job is to get the best from his players. That may require him to adapt his scheme to maximize the strengths of his players and minimize the weaknesses. Unfortunately, Tepper seemed not to understand this. Tepper seemed to insist that the players use his system even though it was obvious they couldn't. His stubborness resulted in the worst defensive performances in LSU history.

Yes Teppers system is actually quite good according to many people. But you need NFL caliber players. He wasn't a good enough coach to realize it would be a failure at LSU.

well, if that was true how come tepper and his "simple math" defense didn't kick arse somewhere else? if a coach has to recruit math majors he ain't gonna get much physical talent. i saw what happened on the field and it was an absolute abortion. and any coach that states it takes 3 years to teach a defense should be fired for saying it. he's probably just trying to buy time anyway. his defensive schemes sucked and he brought dinardo down with him.

Money was one element in Carl Reese's departure. Another major element was that Reese felt that DiNardo was trying to micromanage him. There was a little friction between the two during the last season. Reese himself admitted as much after he went to Texas.

Every linebacker who played for him loved him and would run through a wall for him. He was excellent at coaching linebacker technique. However, as a coordinator, a position for which he was paid handsomely and the duties of which he was completely ill-equipped to perform, he was unimaginably bad.

His ideas...methods became unsound. Unsound.

That made me laugh b/c part of me agrees with you even though we had some real good fun back then, going through the drinking age change, the Bringing Back the Magic game, and we beat Arky under the interim coach!

The 90s were a fun time at LSU. So fun I spent most of them there.
