He was golden glove or some shite at 2nd

And Thompson is a top 50 college prospect according to D1Baseball. I don’t care what someone did or how good they’re supposed to be. Merrifield has not been good in the field at LSU this year at any position he’s played.

And fwiw, Thompson did fine when he was moved to 2nd base.

I’m not saying we have any great options, but Thompson has been the worst defensive player all year. Merrifield hasn’t played 2nd at all this year, a position he played well previously. And Thompson didn’t hit well at all last weekend or tonight.

I’m fine with trying that after the series midweek or Saturday if we lose tomorrow. I’m just not a fan of doing it until the series is over. Unless you feel strongly about another option. And I’m sure JJ doesn’t.

He’s only played one position while at LSU.

So why is he playing SS right now?

Because there isn’t another capable SS on the roster. Doughty isn’t the answer there either, he’s kind of a break glass SS.

You don’t think there is one other person on the roster that can field better than Thompson at SS right now?

The two they’ve tried couldn’t. SEC caliber shortstops don’t grow on trees.

He doesn't need to sit.

It's swap Doughty and Thompson time again for probably the next 1/4 of the season - then re-evaluate in the last 1/4.

Which has only been 3rd base…at least try to be consistent in your ranting.

Doughty has a higher fielding % than Thompson. Bianco, who is apparently hurt at the moment, hasn’t been given a chance. I just don’t get why you are defending the worst defensive player so far this year.

I disagree. You can’t keep swapping them. It needs to be established and I don’t think Doughty is a long term answer.

He’s tried putting Thompson at 2B for a stretch to get him some confidence. It didn’t work. Next step is sending him to the bench to see if it lights a fire.

What part of me saying Thompson needs to be benched makes you think I’m defending him?

I’m simply pointing out that none of the players you’ve mentioned are SEC caliber shortstops. I don’t think Thompson is either with the ways he’s played, just to be clear. Though he does have the most potential.

Dude, Cade misplayed a routine groundball that scored the runs to beat us. It was silly how bad it was misplayed. Pay attention.

Exactly. Doughty isn’t exactly Ozzie Smith out there.

I don’t disagree. I’m not saying we have great shortstops. I just want someone who can field better than Thompson.

Because Doughty wasn’t playing well there either and I assume JJ thought Thompson worked through his issues with his break playing 2nd. Obviously he didn’t but that’s likely the reason

Which games and how many balls did he have a chance to field?

He’s saying that benching him tomorrow is not an easy or automatic decision. At the very least. But sitting him is probably necessary to hope it clears his head. Not sure if he means tomorrow though. Regardless, it’s not an automatic decision.

Doughty is fielding .913.
Cranford is fielding .778.
Merrifield is fielding .879.

I’m not really sure who you can put other than Doughty, and after 4-5 games he’s going to look just about as bad as Thompson.
