Sorry if this post is too long but I’m very excited about what I’ve seen our first two SEC games. I want to make it very clear that this post is not about comparing McMahon to Wade. I like both of them a lot. I strictly want to discuss personnel and expectations.

Going into both seasons we didn’t really know what to expect and, just as in 2017, I have been very pleasantly surprised with our basketball team this year. Our 2017 team beat eventual NCAAT runner up Michigan, a Houston team that reached the Sweet 16, swept a good Arky team, and also swept a Sweet 16 A&M team. However, we had some bad losses such as Stephen F. Austin at home and IIRC got swept by a crappy Georgia team and ultimately fell short of the tournament.

Our OOC schedule was much weaker this year than it was in 2017, but we currently have a better record and beat an Arkansas team who could compete for a natty once they get fully healthy. We also came 1 freak Jacob Toppin 3 pointer from pulling off a win in Rupp Arena. Couldn’t really imagine a better start to the season if you ask me.

Now, I do think that we have more talent than we did in 2017. KJ Williams and Fountain are much better than Epps and Reath and though we may not currently have a dominant player like Tremont Waters, I think Miller can get to that level once fully healthy. If we continue on our current trajectory I fully expect us to compete for an NCAAT spot, but this will be a tall task considering how deep the conference is this year.

All in all, I think we found a keeper in McMahon and I am super excited for the rest of this season.

Didn't read all of that.

Tremont Waters is the main reason Will Wade had success in his first 2 seasons at LSU.

they looked ok but not cooking.

the test is next off season. recruiting at highest level? really good transfers in?

its a miracle that he got the Murray guys to transfer with him because they are already solid and know him.

Its at least decent in year1. one of the Murray guys is a 6 9" skinny freshman.
he's got the bright future. post moves and passing. some day maybe the 3 ball.

we shall see. they are going to beat Kentucky at home.
grrr. rah rah.

I'll have to disagree somewhat with the comparison of Waters and Miller, I don't think Miller is to that level, even at full health. I'll gladly eat my words if he does get to that level though.

I just remember that big man lineup of Aaron Epps and Duop Reath.

I liked Will wade and his ability to get good players here but without an elite guard to get the offense out of trouble he had no answers and it would result to pickup ball at the brec gym. MM staff is constantly drawing up plays to get his best players easy and open shots. Give him WW roster and he does just as good if not better.

This roster is much better overall than the 17-18 roster. Plus that team was coming off a year in 16-17 where apathy had reached a 10+ year peak. After wasting the Simmons season in 15-16, no one cared about 16-17 where it was known Jones was a lame duck. That LSU team was picked to finish last in the SEC going into the season. Wade, largely through the efforts of Waters, was able to get some solid wins early. They also started SEC play well with a tough home loss to Kentucky, followed by wins at A&M (Water's buzzer beater) and at Arkansas. They then didn't win another road game the rest of the year, nor have any great victories from that point on. Still, they very much exceeded their last place expectations.

Everyone made a huge fuss about the start of McMahon's tenue with countless "doomsday" predictions. Some on here going as far to opine LSU would be fortunate to win 1 or 2 games in the SEC over the next 2 seasons! The freedom of transfer rules expedites the "rebuilding" process at a rate never before seen. People who don't follow basketball closely are now shocked to see this team isn't bad. Yet, if you were paying attention you knew this wasn't a bad roster. Top 5 in the SEC? Probably not. But not "bad" by any means.

I think this team is probably right on pace with what reasonable preseason expectations should have been. They won 11 games in what was expected to be a very weak non-conf. schedule. They were able to win a close game at home vs. a good opponent and just lost a hard fought game on the road vs. a good opponent. That is probably how much of the season will go from here on out. LSU is good enough to compete with anyone in the SEC on a given night. But probably not good enough to run away from many teams on a given night.

A win last night would have been an unexpectedly great bonus. Unfortunately, LSU fell just short. However, I'm more interested to see if they can carry the way the played last night into two winnable games at A&M and home vs. Florida. Get those two, and you are still on pace to compete for a tournament spot in the final month of the season. I don't think this team is vastly overachieving relative to reasonable preseason expectations. But they certainly aren't underachieving either.

This is such a dumb narrative. LSU had ELITE offenses in 2020 and 2021. Top 5 in the nation in terms of offensive efficiency. Maybe it wasn't "aesthetically pleasing" to many, but it was highly, highly effective. In comparison, until last night this LSU team was ranked 104 in offensive efficiency. Last night was maybe the best the offense has played all season. Hopefully that is a harbinger of things to come, but it's not a great argument to say McMahon's offense is much better (at least right now). Are there some aspects in the halfcourt of McMahon's offense you really like? Absolutely. But if you took one of those Wade "pickup ball" offenses and combined it with this team's defense, LSU would be a top 10 team right now.

Paying players was permissible for some programs. Kentucky, Duke, Kansas....
Paying players is now legal.
What's your problem? Having trouble with facts?

It was top 10 which is still good but not top 5. And once again he had an elite 1 on 1 guard on that roster. One could argue he had 2.

Can you specifically tell me of 2 plays they drew up for that offense or was it just dribble dribble shoot shoot? Most of their offense from last year came from fastbreak points off steals which is impressive but u can’t rely on that in the tournament.
