Let’s take a look at our receivers from the 2014 recruiting class

Malachi Dupre: 5-star prospect
#1 receiver in the country
#17 overall player
Drew comparisons to AJ Green; had an underwhelming career at LSU. Left school early to become a 7th round draft pick and get cut from the Packers; ended up playing for the Bills at the end of last year.
Trey Quinn: 4-star prospect
Top 10 receiver in the country
#83 overall player
Came in as the national high school receiving yards record holder. Had some flashes early on, but was benched his freshman year after 2 critical 3rd down drops against Alabama. Transferred to SMU after his sophomore year where he had decent production and was the last pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
Tony Upchurch: 4-star prospect
Top 50 receiver in the country
Top 300 overall player
Not sure if he ever played a down for LSU. Transferred to Texas southern where he has one catch for 21 yards.
DJ Chark: 3-star prospect
59th ranked receiver in the country (that’s 58 behind Malachi)
435th overall player
After 2 years at LSU he had touched the ball 2 times; both in the Texas bowl and one for an 81 yard touchdown. Did not record a catch his first 2 seasons at LSU but stuck around all 4 years and played himself into a second round draft pick.
Russel Gage: 3-star prospect
74th rated athlete in the country
898th rated overall player
Played very sparingly, if any, his first 2 years at LSU. Was a special teamer and mostly a decoy receiver his junior year. His senior year he proved himself productive and athletic. He ended up being a 6th round pick in the 2018 draft.
Funny how this works. Hats off DJ and Russel. Also, 3 years ago, who would’ve bet that Danny Etling would be drafted and Brandon Harris not?

I wish there was option to let all undrafted underclass man return to school or continue as an udf

Yeah if you don’t get drafted you should be allowed to go back to school. I get the agent part of it though. Sadly some kids feel that even a free agent signing in the NFL is a better option than staying another year at LSU

This is the exact reason some NFL teams like the smaller school players. 5 stars without the right hunger for the game is a recipe for disaster. Malachi and many other 4,5 stars don’t live up to potential bc they have been courted for 3-4 years of high school and feel entitled to being good without the work as the competition stiffens.

I'm going to venture a guess here...
WR is one of those positions that there a lot to learn coming out of HS, DB as well. What I'm getting at that the physical specimens have a long way to go and there is a whole lot of leaning and coaching that is required to turn them into an all conference or NFL-draft quality reciever.
The tricks to the trade and techniques are numerous. Couple that with all of the following:
- as a program, we've "skimped" on WR coaches for a while now
- A WR can dominate in HS based on physical attributes, but the opponent shoots up in quality at P5 programs
- "speed of the game" means you have to be meticulous at P5 level, no plays off
- went from being THE target to a decoy/clearout/pick and blocker 2/3 of the time
I've always seen the WR position as one that has the highest potential of "bust" because it's a complete 180 from relying on speed/size in HS to having to have excellent technique. The highest ranked might not be putting the effort in AND/OR not receiving the right coaching (because the coaches are enamored with their physical attributes).
This all applies to DBs too. QB's, whole other ball game. RBs and LBs can rely on physical attributes more (not completely) and OL/DL are like QBs in a whole lot to learn, but also have to develop physically more than anyone else.

Looking like Drake and Sullivan might end up undrafted if their current production at LSU is any sign. I could definitely see the younger guys coming in this year and snatching away the starting jobs.

The coaching change helped DJ Chark and Russel Gage.
If Miles were the coach not sure they would have gotten their chance.
Miles made promises to kids in recruiting and tried hard to live up to them, even though the kids did not produce at the level they should have and did not earn the loyalty on the field.

Never thought Malachi was that good from the get go, didn't high point the ball, didn't catch ball in traffic on a consistent basis, so-so hands and didn't play with an all out attitude. He was 6'4" and played like he was 5'8". He was a product of the system he played in in high school, they ran so much, when they threw to dupre he was wide open and didn't have to high point alot of balls or catch alot of balls in traffic and never "adjusted or stepped up his game".
