Former LSU WR hospitalized after Fla. accident
The Associated Press
MIAMI -- Former LSU receiver Demetrius Byrd was in critical but stable condition Monday after a car accident in Miami, and his agent said the NFL prospect was expected to fully recover.
Byrd had scrapes and bruises but was being held in intensive care for observation, said his junior college coach, Tim Hatten of Pearl River Community College in Mississippi. Hatten had talked with Byrd's mom, who said her son was alert and talking at the hospital.
Agent David Dunn said in a statement that initial reports indicated Byrd will be OK. The statement did not give Byrd's injuries or any details about the crash Sunday.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Demetrius, and with his mother Sharon and the entire Byrd family," Dunn said.
Last season, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound receiver had 37 catches for 513 yards and four TDs. He also played a key role in the Tigers' BCS National Championship during the previous year.
LSU officials said that Byrd's car hit a utility pole after a tire blew out. No other cars were involved.
"This tragic accident puts in perspective just how fragile life can be," said LSU head coach Les Miles. "Demetrius is an outstanding young man with a bright future ahead of him. He was a joy to coach and he brought a great smile and a wonderful attitude to our football team. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as we hope for a speedy recovery."
Byrd played at Miami Central High School before attending junior college.
The NFL draft begins Saturday. Byrd was considered among the top 15 wide receivers entering the draft.

Initials reports are that D Byrd is in critical condition & receiving hourly CT scans at Jackson Memorial Hospital. While frequent CT scans are unusual, the technology for bedside scans exists
Jackson Memorial appears to have this capability at its truama center, The Ryder Trauma Center.
I hope things are not as serious as they appear.

The stable xenon CT method of measuring cerebral blood flow has recently been gaining clinical acceptance, primarily owing to a combination of several unique advantages it holds over other cerebral blood flow measurement techniques. The accuracy of this technique in quantifying low cerebral blood flow gives it a unique application in cases of brain death and acute stroke and it can be repeated after an interval of 20 min. making it possible to evaluate autoregulation and cerebrovascular reserve.
Jackson Memorial appears to have this capability at its truama center, The Ryder Trauma Center.

The center is geared toward lowering the preventable death rate by speeding up the delivery of trauma care during the “golden hour”, the critical 60 minutes after an injury. The Ryder Trauma Center is one of the largest, most comprehensive trauma centers in the world.
I hope things are not as serious as they appear.

In the wake of LSU wide receiver Demetrius Byrd’s major car accident that has left him hospitalized in stable condition at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital’s intensive care unit, the NFL draft prospect is now able to respond to people’s voices, squeeze hands and can blink on command, according to LSU receivers coach D.J. McCarthy.

Chicken: You have BAD info. You are going to feel bad when the facts are released!
I know for a fact the the updates are correct about the seriousness of his injuries. He is in ICU for a reason but his vitals are stable. Please stop this craziness and just pray for him. Details will come when there is a definite change. I hope he makes a full recovery and is able to play in the NFL but most of all I pray that he recovers and is able to lead a high quality life. God works all things out for good--He has a plan!!! Just continue to pray. This board was frequently a source of annoyance for Byrd--he took it to heart! He is a young man who has made mistakes as ALL of us have. So for once just SHUT UP and pray for him!

They just ran it on the bottom line on ESPN-
That he is in the ICU for observation and they expect him to make a full recovery
That he is in the ICU for observation and they expect him to make a full recovery

Obviously you've been in touch with someone onsite. Is the prognosis for full recovery correct? I pray that it is.

whether they are correct they are very similar and infact probably both based on
"Earlier today, Byrd’s agent, David Dunn, issued a statement noting that Byrd is expected to make a full recovery.
Byrd’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or career-threatening"

RIGHT NOW!! get off Chickens back and be productive instead of attacking the entire world!!! ...when this thing happenned, there was so much bad- and dis- information that no-one knows ANYTHING about exactly what what was going on!!!!!!!!!... at least Chicken, and this site, were trying to be objective!!!! This is a time for pulling together, massing the strength of the site, AND NOT ATTACKING EACH OTHER!!!!!

in my opinion, this could be STICKIED again... but that is just me...

I work in a level 1 trauma center and regularly care for patients with head trauma. Everything I am reading sounds as if DB is suffering from a significant head injury. The fact that he is responsive and following commands at this time is very encouraging. Every human responds and recovers from head injury differently. Keep him and his family in your prayers. He will have a long and difficult recovery.
