I'm not sure how anyone can look at this game last night and come to the conclusion that Chavis was ever the problem.
The logic in your post is incredibly flawed

d, once again, the opposing team effortlessly drove the length of the field into LSU territory, and put themselves in a position to win the game - and no, John Chavis wasn't coaching the defense.
That last drive was not effortlessly. We applied pressure, made him get rid of the ball and it probably won us the game.

And I now fully understand why Chavis left.
He left for money and a guaranteed contract
If anything, last night showed me that our D will be fine without Chavis, despite the lack of DT depth he left us with

19 points and you blame the defense

The biggest problem with Les Miles is that he doesn't gameplan to actually go out and dominate and win games. He gameplans to just be in the game in the 4th with a chance to win. Obviously it's backfired on him a lot and it leaves the opponent with a chance to steal the game at the end after being dominated for most of the game. It's very telling that a very loyal guy like Chavis chose to leave. And now Steele will be getting a lot of heat bcuz the defense who dominates a game for 3-3.5 quarters finally gets a lil tired and starts giving up yards bcuz at the end of a game. Those yards would be meaningless in a blowout but bcuz our ultra conservative play calling those yards are key to holding on to the win. And now the game rests on the bodies of our tired defense who have dominated most of the game.

quote:so despite being in a similar situation the outcome was different without Chavis compared to with chavis. Where was the narrative wrong again?
After Chavis left, the narrative that was sold by this board was that he was the problem. There have been a handful of games in the past where we were unable to stop the opposing team on the final drive, so he had to go. He was the issue. Despite fielding the #1 defensive in the SEC last year with young players, Chavis was the problem. This is what the LSU fan base has been led to believe.
And yet, here we were, yet again, in the exact same position last night - hanging on by a thread, with the opponent having an opportunity to drive down the field and win the game in the final seconds.

Last night was blatant proof that John Chavis was never the problem.
What was the problem in those losses where the opponents won the game with the last at bat?
2012 Alabama
2012 Clemson
2013 UGA
2013 Ole Miss
2014 Alabama
2014 Notre Dame
I probably forgot some.
I know the offense wasn't firing on all cylinders, but is that really a valid excuse to completely fold in the end when you have most of the momentum? Some of these losses were make or break for LSU those seasons.

The greatest thing about the OP's moronic post is that he is sounding like an A&M fan trying to troll lsu fans and say Chavis left because of lsu's offense
No, it had nothing to do with more money and more job security but lsu's offense.

The OP clearly went over your head.
I'm blaming the offense. The defense was fantastic.
Chavis was never the problem, and Steele won't be a problem (at least not this year). The problem is an incompetent offense that repeatedly puts our defense in dangerous situations.

D was lights out until gassing in the 4th. I like the way Steele calls D better than Chavis
Les Miles has trust issues. Need to let Harris open up Syracuse and Eastern games and see what he's got. If we survive Bama, ATM, and Ole Miss, win SEC, no one keeps us out playoff if we fall in one of those non Conference games

Chavis was part of the problem. He's the Les Miles of defenses without the recruiting ability. Safe and conservative to a fault.
shite, when Saban was here we had so many blitz packages, we named them after the 50 states! Chavis rarely attacked the QB. Last night we sacked and pressured Dak all night long while keeping beautiful contain

we had more sacks in the 1st qtr than 4 games combined. Love seeing pressure Zak, first half they were rattled & didn't have an answer. perfectly timed penalties prevented us from putting the game completely out of reach in he first half.
they mad adjustments at half & we didn't.
it was one of the most one-sided officiating i've seen in a long time. had me wondering if it was intentional to help them get back in the game.

Worst thing about being an LSU fan= the other fans.
Finding a way to bitch about a road win over a ranked SEC opponent. Thats sad.

The defense allowed MSU to go from their own 11 yard line down to our 31.
The difference is that they had a delay of game penalty and a poor kicking game.
You're missing the bigger picture, though - why were we in this exact same situation to begin with?
The offensive ineptitude puts our defense in these positions. Sometimes the defense holds. Sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, the defense is blamed, while the offense, which is the root of the problem, gets a pass.
This is bullshite.
At the end of the day you have e to be able to make stops. Our defense has not been doing that the last 3 years.
You can't just toss your hands up in the air and say "oh well the offense should have had us up 2 scores". We lost too many games in the last 2 minutes to say it wasn't a defensive problem.

This was the first game of the season. We had two TDs called back. LSU was up 21-6 going into the 4th and LSU's defense held a team that ran roughshod over Chavis' defense the last two years to 43 yards on 26 attempts.
Chavis never did that, but Pelini has. Last year, Chavis' defense gave up 2 TDs in the first and 2 TDs in the third. I would say Chavis wasn't the whole of the solution either.

Keep in mind that this was a first game and it was against a middle of the road SEC team. It was hardly what you would want to open up against, when you are trying to get players past first game jitters.
Yes, there is a lot of work to do. No, I sure as hell wouldn't write the season off on what I saw last night. As for the second half play calling, that may have been some other shite going on at the time, perhaps injuries that Les is not going to say shite about publicly.
The kid is out there now taking starting snaps. He needs to be brought along gradually, so that he doesn't frick up to the point of losing his confidence.

Btw, we're #12 in 3rd Down Conversion Pct Defense (15 Opp 3rd att, 3 converted). Offensively, we just need to learn how to capitalize on that.

Cs = Idiot
and a clear DECEPTATIGER
clearly a loser. he'd rather lose according to his loser style than WIN with a TRUE WINNER LIKE OPTIMUS MILES. you miserable TPOS.

It just doesn't make sense to change from what worked for you in the first half. If Harris had thrown a couple of picks in the first half I could see a very conservative second half.
