It's pretty clear that the Patriots have an eye for value at the QB position. All of their backups have done well when given the chance to play (which has been mostly in preseason and at the end of blowouts). Character and intelligence are obviously high on their list of QB traits. Other than Ryan Mallet who was still a nice pick value wise as a backup.

Always felt Etling had other outstanding qualities that people overlooked besides character and intelligence though. His awareness and especially his movement in a muddled pocket while still keeping his eyes down the field is so rare to find in a college QB. Hell, there are a lot of pro QB's that struggle with it when the pocket collapses.

Another great trait he had was decision making under duress and knowing when to throw/not throw or throw it away.

And he was tough as hell.

Best comparison is Alex Smith imo.

Well, why did you draft him, Bill? Oh wait. This isn't coach Belichick. This is some dumbass who thinks he knows everything about being a professional QB. Glad to see Etling get a chance, but I really hope he can prove you wrong.

Shows annual contract at $641,000. Nothing guaranteed but not bad for a guy not expected to get drafted.

Essentially meaningless.

No guaranteed contracts in NFL. Anytime he doesn't make the roster, whether training camp this year or anytime during the four years, the Patriots owe him nothing.

No risk at all for NE.

The patriots have drafted Rohan Davey, Kliff Kingsbury, Kevin McConnell, Matt Cassell, and Zac Robinson in the Brady era.

Along with Mallet, Brissett, and Garoppolo.

That’s a good eye for QBs?

Brady has been around for a long time though. A few busts are going to happen.

Point is, Etling is making a little money as a backup QB. Best job in the NFL.

I posted this in another thread, but that list includes 3 guys that started games for their teams, not including Brady. 2 of which finished the season as the starter. Mallet was the #2 guy and saw snaps.

I would challenge you to find another team that drafted 4 dudes that stared a game at the QB position, in any given year. The list will be short.

The Pats are about as good as it gets in drafting QBs, and maybe drafting overall. They have been a dominant force in the NFL.

An NFL QB at the helm these past two years for LSU, I always felt he was under-rated, good for him!

That would be cool! Flynn made about 30 million dollars holding a clipboard up at Green Bay and his career!

Considering QB is the hardest position to hit on in the draft and also in college, and you don't have a new starter every other year, the above list is pretty good.

Name another team that drafted that many successful quarterbacks over the same span of time. Cassell, Brissett, and Jimmy G all had success with the Pats and then were productive with another team, albeit varying degrees of success. This is after drafting and developing one of the best quarterbacks of all time in Brady.
