I’ve always been told that swag in this sense means

Stuff
We
All
Get.

SWAG.

come on, man. Swag can mean "swagger," but in this case it's an acronym for "stuff we all get."

Everyone knows this.

The English word "swag" meaning trendy or fashionable is old as Croesus. It's attested in literature as far back as 1595 (by Shakespeare, no less) and probably entered the language as far back as the 11th century, from Old Norse "sveggja".

Of course the Vikings invented and no doubt marketed "swag" a long time ago.
