re: Kevin Mawae to interview for OL job

Anybody that thinks Kevin Mawae isn't qualified to be an OL coach is an idiot. Playing OL is about 3 things..... 1)strength, 2) technique and 3) assignments. LSU has a S&C coach for #1. Nobody is more qualified to teach a young player the other 2 things than a future NFL Hall of Fame CENTER. A center is responsible for line calls and knows how an OL has to work together as a unit better than anybody. It's all about understanding the entirety of the offensive game. It's similar to the reason that catchers make the best major league managers.

and vice versa, being a good player doesn't equal being a great coach
You just regurgitated my point

if Willie Roaf were interested in making a career of coaching, you'd be stupid not to talk to him.
Posted on 1/9/14 at 1:42 pm to AdamDeMamp
My major worry is how much does Mawae want to be a full time coach. Hopefully this isn't just something that keeps him involved with football now that his playing days are over.
It would have been nice to see him be a full time coach at this level before wanting to step into this role at LSU.

Your point was that the best coaches were shitty players. Or at least that is how you typed it.

No, I said just just because he was a great player doesn't make him a slam dunk for a coach.
The Payton/Belichick analogy was to make my point

Of course. But you can't just AUTOMATICALLY assume that he will be a great coach. That's the issue that people are having. No one (at least not me) is writing off hiring Mawae as a definite bad idea, so don't interpret it as that. Let's just let the interview process run its course. Maybe there's a guy who has a proven track record of success in College and/or the NFL that would be interested. Wouldn't you prefer that over the perceived risk of hiring Mawae?

Ken Norton Jr..........sucked at coaching LBs after he was done...........terrible mistake IMO
Are you comparing his career/educational background/and respectability to KM?

No it doesn't. But we're not just saying he was a great player. The guy was obviously one of the most respected players in the entire nfl by his piers. And handled many off the field issues as well. The potential rewards with having this guy involved in the program far far far outweigh potential risks from inexperience.

He lives in BR already and he is here to stay with kids and community involvement.

Gee thanks, glad we have your support.
I was the fist to mention Mawae yesterday.

No way man. It HAS to be somebody I know who went to LSU and was good. Nothing less. I will not accept someone I'm not familiar with.

Coaching is less about knowledge and more about how well one can teach that knowledge. Any way you cut it, there's a lot of risk if Mawae is the hire.

Serious question....when does Jerry Rice start as the WR coach?

Mawae said he has exchanged texts with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, who is likely to have a say in the decision.

If Cameron thinks the guy can coach, then I'm all for it

There would be some risk. Sure. But there would be a ton of reward potentially as well. Being the type of person that Mawae is, I don't think he'd have any trouble teaching college kids how to play OL.

Which is kind of my point. Is this a job he wants because he's ready to be a full time coach or is it because he wants to be involved with football, but still stay close to his family.
If he has the desire to coach at this level and put in all the time and effort that goes alon with it, great. Just wish we could have seen him prove that desire somewhere else first.
Posted on 1/9/14 at 1:52 pm to oreeg
It's not because he went to LSU.
16 years playing at highest level is > than coaching college with zero NFL coaching experience.
