My brother was on the team with Kevin and has heard the same thing from 3 other former lineman to confirm:)

This is the confusion. By all accounts Mawae isn't one of those players who just relied on instinct and talent. His comments on the OL's lack of technique this year tell me a good bit. If he were to just say "yeah they sucked" then it's a different matter, but he wouldn't be breaking down film if he was just tossing out anecdotal shite like that. Like I said, I have full faith in Cam to be able to access a position coach's aptitude.
He played every position on the line at LSU when he was here.

The question is, can he coach the line the way Cam wants them coached.

I have no doubt he'd be fine on the coaching end. I do question his desire to hit the road and recruit.
We need someone who can excel at both right now

quote:I agree with statement as it relates to skill position players and even baseball and basketball players. Historically your most athletic lineman play on defense, which forces the o-line to rely more on technique than ability. KM might have the quickest first step as any OL ever which would certainly attribute to his longevity, but I am pretty sure his cerebral ability and technique kept him in the league longer than his athletic ability.
Sometimes great players are just instinctively great and can't exactly pinpoint why that is so or teach others the things that made them great

Ken Norton Jr..........sucked at coaching LBs after he was done...........terrible mistake IMO
Wat? This is the list of LBs he was responsible for at USC:
Lofa Tatupu
Keith Rivers
Brian Cushing
Clay Matthews
Ray Maualuga

I would definitely rather a stud recruiter and an average actual coach, than a really good coach that can't recruit worth a shite

Ummmmm, not on the OL. Not in this offense. You can hire an extra guy to do the recruiting.

With due respect to the fans who are raising legitimate concerns about hiring a guy without significant coaching experience, please put me firmly in the camp that would be completely jacked to see Kevin Mawae introduced as LSU's new O-line coach.

it doesnt matter if he has never coached...you either know the technique or you dont. it's very simple. he can recruit because of who he is and i know he has a great personality.
This. 16 years in the league tells me you know the position. Former tiger tells me you love LSU. And his NFL experience will be appealing to recruits.

I think that Les & Cam would be crazy not to at least talk to him.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. On one hand, he was an amazing player and is a really good guy. You have to be really smart to play center, so I'm sure the knowledge he could pass on would be second to none. On the other hand, being a good player does not necessarily translate into being a good coach. Has he been doing any kind of coaching since he retired?
Guys, he's not calling offensive plays. He's showing them how to do things like run and pass block. He's also showing them how to digest information (especially the center) so the right play call can be made based upon LSU's blocking schemes.

It would be nice if Les could find a guy that could do both
I'm not sure Mawae would be that guy, having exactly zero experience with recruiting

Sounds good. Let's hire Mawae and call him the assistant OL coach. I just want him on the staff.

Does he have any coaching experience, or just a hell of a player? Sometimes it doesn't translate.

It doesn't really matter. If LSU just takes one thing from Bama it will be to absolutely load up on the recruiting support staff. They have the money for it.
