Kelly and Half-Time Adjustments

Does anyone have any insight into how BK does with half-time adjustments? I’d like to believe he’s got to be better than what we’ve had the last two go-arounds. A coach that can adjust at half-time is one of the most lethal forces in CFB, and it doesn’t seem as common a trait as you’d think. I think it’s one of the things that makes Saban so effective. How do you guys think he’ll do with that?

Seems like a good question. Why the downvote?

I know he’ll do a lot better than Coach 0 did.

I can personally guarantee you… it cannot be worse than Les or O

I would bet a Red Bull is not involved.

I'll tell you in about a month or so.

From what I’ve seen of Kelly in the past, he’s pretty good at adjusting and keeping his team in the game at the end.
Sure, there were games when he was over-matched and there wasn’t a whole lot he could do about it, but his teams rarely looked lost or defeated against equal competition late in a game.

Winningest coach in ND history tends to have higher score than opponents at the end of the game, whether halftime or any other adjustments are needed.
That should be good enough for most fans.

So, I’m not sure how one could measure this but I tried. I ignored blow outs
Showing 2nd half points for Opponents and ND
In 2019. USC W. 2nd half Opp +21 ND -4
VT W Opp -8 ND -7
UGA L. Opp +9 ND -3
Mich L Opp +11 ND +14
Stanford. Opp -10 ND +3
2021
NC w Opp +8 ND+10
Cincy L Opp -10 ND +13
Toledo W Opp -3 ND +14
VT W Opp +3 ND +4
FSU W Opp +10 ND +7

I have had several football coaches on various levels tell me that this whole concept is overrated and is just a message board catch-phrase. There really isn't a whole lot that they can really change in a 20-minute halftime period. Yeah, they might make a tweak here or there, but it really isn't a massive overhaul like message board jockeys think it is.

True adjustments come from the coordinators, and the good ones don't wait till halftime.

Are you talking about the last two coaches, each of whom have won national championships versus one that hasn't?
I think the average fan has no clue as to how much can be adjusted during the game. You can't throw out wholesale the offense and defense you have planned for and practiced all week. Most of the "adjustments" have already been schemed for as in "if they do this, we'll counter with that" sort of thing.

I recall a lot of Rant bitching in the majority of Miles games for having close scores at half.....then Tigers pulling away 2nd half.

Don’t be coy Gray. Did you type that with a crooked grin?

He can’t be worse than orgeron the last two years. It really showed how much aranda and ensminger did

ND fans hated him for coming out of halftime looking like shite.

The great coaches can watch a couple drives and identify what the other team is trying to do and make necessary adjustments in the 1st quarter...as well as throughout the game. The ones that wait til half time usually come up short.

quote:O is the coach that the rant claimed Miles was. Les Miles is an infinitely better head coach than Orgeron. Lumping the 2 together makes no sense.

It's a sound question.
At Notre Dame, Kelly was not big on half time adjustments on the offensive side, but was on the defensive side.
The guy threw thirty times in a Hurricaine vs ncstate and kept throwing over and over vs a very much outmatched dline. After the game he somehow blamed the center.
That's an extreme example, but Kelly was ALWAYS able to manufacture points when his talent was equal to or above the opponent. When out matches he had issues adjusting his scheme midgame which is why you see the blowouts on the playoff. He always seemed to stick to his original plan and have faith that the points will come, and they usually do.
