Mariners trade Castillo

But with No. 2 prospect Kade Anderon expected to be part of their permanent plans as soon as 2027, and potentially sooner for a playoff push, and No. 3 prospect Ryan Sloan not far behind, they were willing to deal from their big league depth to bolster the rest of the roster.

Ms were managing Kade perfectly for their longer term goals. Keep Castillo with some value then deal an experienced MLB starter to add pieces to the rest of the team.

Nah, they are waving the white flag for this season with the Castillo trade and putting Kirby on the market.

Almost certain Kade Anderson is better than Castillo at this point, so pretty sure that trade is more about making room for Anderson.

If your goal was balls to the wall contention, then I would agree that trading Kirby is counter to that.

Agreed. We took in an Ms game last week while traveling for a wedding. They are pretty terrible. About half of their lineup are automatic outs. Couldn't get runners across when needed. Senseless errors. Felt like watching our Tigers this past season. They are definitely selling off pieces right now and rebuilding. Kade will be up sooner than later, and should be. But they are definitely not making a playoff push and trying to make him a part of it.

Castillo was the oldest, most expensive, and biggest disappointment of the 6 starters this year. They’ve been trying to move him for a while. Getting the White Sox to pay for all of his salary was a huge win

It’s also not clear if they’ll stay with 6 starters. Anderson may get the call, or he may get the call in a month to get a taste when rosters expand, or with the team fading fast (and after his heavy LSU workload last year) they may just shut him down and have him start 2027 in the bigs. Either way, this move was done for reasons beyond him

Fangraphs still has the Mariners with a near 50% chance of making playoffs. I just can’t see them punting on the season when they have the frontline starters they do.

The Mariners just shelved Anderson for like three weeks last month, I think that was to preserve some innings for the final stretch.
