So we’re comparing Kirby with Dave now?

We’re comparing where Dave is now vs. where Kirby was when he got the Georgia gig, and I think Dave compares very favorably.

dave held it down all 4 years at LSU.

not sure who all the realistic candidates are, but i would be happy with dave depending on how he finishes the year. maybe 8-4.

Aranda seems like the next Nick Saban in comparison to the current situation. My understanding is that he would need a recruiting staff built around him, he does not like that as much.

This guy gets it. In short, he is everything that Miles and Ogeron are not. Related to #10, not sure how much he is making now, but it would be more than that to come over and better than what Ed received when he was first made HC at LSU. Unfortunately we are not negotiating from a position of strength.
quote:

1) proven to be one of the best defensive minds in college football and just very intelligent and cerebral in general
2) displayed a tremendous work ethic, attention to detail, and organizational skills
3) has established relationships in Louisiana, Texas, and the Midwest
4) would not embarrass the university
5) is very familiar with LSU and knows what it takes to win big here. Coached under 2 NC HCs and is smart enough to have taken the things that Les and Ed did well along with what they didn’t
6) is very respected in coaching circles and with the money LSU has for assistants, would always be able to make very good to great hires.
7) appears to be very easy to work with and for and is the kind of coach good, younger, ambitious assistants would want to come and learn from.
8) apparently je and his family are fond of Baton Rouge as he could have left a couple of times, but I think he stayed to learn more about what it takes to build and maintain a championship program
9):is an expert on one side of the ball and not a larger than life cartoon character, 2 traits that most on this board seem to want as prerequisites
10) is attainable at a decent price

He isn’t a good recruiter

He’s not? He may not have the charisma of Les or O, but he seemed to recruit pretty well here. But I think players and parents would really respect his honesty in his vision for them and wouldn’t appreciate the bullshite smoke blowing. I also think he would focus more on academics and the value of an LSU education that would appeal to parents on top of his track record of getting guys into the NFL.

would require a great OC and staff of great recruiters.

So like every other successful coach in CFB. And with his organization skills, his recruiting plan would be a lot more efficient and focused on building a complete roster rather than signing a bunch of 5 star skill position guys (that a significant number would wind up transferring anyway) just to “win” the recruiting national championship.

easier to find salesmen than actual football coaches.

we all see who held team discipline together after dave left. also gives us an elite coach on one side of the ball.

Very true, but there are different kinds of salesmen, and I think Dave could be the one I was and had success with and the type I always preferred as a consumer. There’s the sleazy salesman that is blowing smoke and trying to sell you the most expensive item you’re looking for. That turns a lot,of,people off. There’s the other type that listens to what you need and is honest with you and shows you what he actually thinks would be best for your particular situation. It helps if you truly believe in your product, and it seems Dave believes in LSU and what it can do for certain young men.

Maybe not, but it did enough to help win games. Also don't forgot how Aranda single handedly kept LSU afloat those last years with Les and first 2 years of Orgeron because our offense was putrid.

i agree. dave wasn't known as a great recruiter because he concerned himself with being an elite coach. he was still a good recruiter.

I love the "can't recruit" meme.

His top recruits include:
Kristian Fulton
Tyler Shelvin
Jacob Phillips
BJ ojulari
Kary Vincent
Jacobian Guillory
Glen Logan
Patrick Queen

I think this is limited thinking. We need to find a detail oriented football guru that can oversee the enter operation and delegate. But with follow up on that delegation.

Also, we need to stop changing the offense every years trying to recreate 2019, we need to develop the LSU version of the spread and when people come and go, they adapt to that basic philosophy.

Why?

Sure we can aim higher, but who are these proven winners and are they attainable? LSU is a great job in a vacuum, but that’s not how life works in CFB. Timing is maybe the most important thing in hiring coaches. And I don’t see the timing being right for most of the guys you would consider proven winners, because all the proven winners currently have good gigs. And there’s the looming NCAA investigations that may give the top guys pause without a resolution.

I mean, there’s almost 0 chance, but I think you have to at least gauge Saban’s interest 1st. Then Chris Petersen, but I don’t think he’d think it’s a good fit. Who else? Kiffin is a proven offensive guru, but not a proven winner. And I’m not sure he’s the kind of guy Woodward would want to work with. James Franklin has baggage, but even if he didn’t, he seems to be at his dream job. With OU joining the SEC shortly, I don”t see how it makes much sense for Riley to leave.

If I had to bet on 1 guy, I think it’d be Brian Kelly. Big name. Proven winner. Probably realizes he’s done as much as he can at Notre Dame and may want a better chance to win an NC before hanging it up. And I’d be fine with that. But I think Aranda possesses the traits to turn us into a dynasty, and I’d much rather take him now than see him at another SEC school in a year or 2.

I like Aranda a lot and loved him as DC here. I don't know if he's the guy for LSU though. I never thought he had the personality to be a great HC. He has the intelligence for sure but the personality seemed like a conflicting factor. It's too early for him to come here that would be a huge risk but we could definitely do worse.

LSU should be able to buy a proven winner to come here and win some football games for us. Homerun hire or bust.
