he is arguably the best coach in big east history. if it was just once or twice, you could say it was luck. 8 tournament championships + 3 trips to omaha with 2 different teams is consistency

The Big East is terrible and LSU is a tournament team, always was. I'm not saying he's not good, he is a good coach, but you can't go by that.

LSU was a tournament team when he got here? we were 1-4 in the SEC tourney in the previous 2 appearances. He's responsible for the program he builds

Compared to the SEC? Sure.

But you have to remember he was coaching a northern cold weather team as well at that time, a team that was on par with the rest of the teams in his conference. And he still dominated.

For the last 25 years, when LSU has made the post season, more often than not, they have turned it on. Amirite?

The new drinking game...

Every time the announcers refer to the 23 game winning streak of 2009 when it was in 2008, you need to finish off your drink.

If they continue talking about how it led them to the title, you need to drink another.

If they talk about how great Zunino is, during a game where Florida is not even playing, you must down 2 drinks.

under Skip Bertman, yes. I don't understand what that has to do with Mainieri's coaching though. This is his program, and he's great in tournaments. Under his predecessor, LSU was not a great tournament team

With regard to the SEC tournament, this is 100% true. Skip never gave a rats arse about the SEC tournament. Mainieri, however, uses it as a springboard for his team to build confidence and better play.

What's funny is that some people in this thread probably think it was 2009 when we had the 23 game winstreak.

I'm so glad someone else caught that... The 23 game winstreak/ gold jersey run was in 2008.... And you people call yourselves fans

I don't think he was talking about Bertman, as Skip was not Mainieri's predecessor.

They were talking about how LSU is a tournament team. I believe that when talking about the program as a whole, he was referring to the years that Skip built and sustained the team.

I dont think anyone would be stupid enough to argue that under Smoke we were a tournament team.

have you heard collis temple was the first

No. But I heard that Jared Mitchell played wide receiver for the football team.

And Andrew Hatch went to Harvard.

His predecessor took us to Omaha a couple times if I'm not mistaken.
