This. I find this news encouraging. It also shows that Chavis values the leadership and intelligence Welter brings to the defense running that mlb spot. Some guys behind him might have him beat on the athleticism but it may not outweigh Welter's advantage in getting the defense in proper positions out there.

I think it's a safe bet to defer to Chavis' judgment on this one and trust that he'll make a switch during the season if Welter's athleticism shows to be lacking such that it no longer justifies the advantages of his smarts and leadership out there.

And if Welter makes a leap this year athletically, then this linebacker corps can be a real challenge for opposing offenses with the raw talent and depth of the outside backers.

Every one used to bitch ab our leading tacklers always being in the secondary. Then we finally get production from the mike linebacker and they keep bitching. I remember a time when Sheppard and minter weren't good enough for the rant. I just find it funny we constantly question our coaches when we lead our conference in wins and NFL players since Les has been here.

Chavis is to Linebackers as Cameron is to Quarterbacks.

If he's impressed that should carry a ton of weight. But it won't.

I feel like I've seen this before.

quote:

Tigers defensive coordinator John Chavis is quick to praise Welter, a 6-foot-1, 226-pounder who enters his fourth year in the program listed as a probable starter at middle linebacker.

LINK from 2013

Let's hope this season is different and he can tackle a running back without having to get behind him and getting drug 3-7 additional yards.

His game against Iowa wasn't all that great. When Iowa actually used their tight ends to exploit the mismatch, Welter got worked (Iowa tight ends combined for 7 receptions for 104 yards, considering they only had 13 receptions and 157 yards, that ain't good). Thankfully, Iowa's coaching staff sucks and Anthony Johnson looked great in that game.

This. Welter never seems to be out of position, just looks like he is usually a step or 2 slower than others during pursuit. That's why he had a good game against Iowa...less speed on that offense than what we were used to.

I'd rather a less athletic guy out there who keeps himself and others in position than a fast one that gives up plays because he doesn't know his reads and checks.

Either way I'm not worried about the LB spot this year!

All 80 tackles must have been in the Iowa game. I don't remember him making any solo tackles during the season.

Welter got a ton of assist tackles not solo. It was absurd as he had 55 assisted tackles to 25 solo. That means he averages less than 2 solo tackles a game.

I hope he improves, but he has poor reaction and physical talent to react to his diagnosis of a play. He did get tons of tackles after getting beat or whiffing first too.

If chief starts him this season, I'll have full confidence in the dude. I think he starts but loses his spot as the season goes on.

I hope dude leads team in tackles and makes some post season team for no bigger reason than to piss off the haters and watch these bitches crawfish.

Holy crap, I'm agreeing with LSU2006

What if Welter knew he was often the weak link of the front 7, and is spending the entire offseason with a chip on his shoulder working his arse off to improve?

No, I actually hope Welter has a good season too. He frustrated me often times last season, I'd like to see him go out on top. I just think its funny how you react to certain situations involving certain players...that's all.

I react by telling truth instead of saying what's popular?

That is funny.

The whole entire defense frustrated last year but for some reason 31 was the scapegoat.
That's actually what you should find funny.
Get it right.
