We only scored 10 points in the first half and that was before we started trying to force the run
Check down check down check down passing will never amount to points. You HAVE TO get chunk plays if you want TDs consistently

It’s wild we used to have a roster full of great RBs but havent been able to find a true game changing one in quite some time, I guess with the league deemphasizing the position, some of the better athletes are opting for other positions

We had 227 yards in the first half on 4 drives.
We had 164 yards in the second half on 5 drives, not counting the pick on the 6th and final drive.

You can’t push it downfield without the matchups. If you can’t run it and bring the extra man into the box forcing it downfield will just bring turnovers. The problem was when they did commit on early downs we weren’t checking out of it and trying to hit em deep. Don’t know if they’re not allowing Nuss to check off but that’s what it looked like. Kelly being ultra conservative in games like these has been the norm so that’s likely what it was.

We had four possessions in the first half. The failed fourth down conversion, a punt from our 50 after we got 30 yards, a touchdown, and field goal.
The first down play on the three times we got stopped and had to go for it, punt, or kick a FG.
1. Josh Williams run for loss of one yard to the USC 9.
2. Josh Williams run for one yard to LsU 49.
3. Josh William run for no gain to USC 32.
But yeah the passing game wasn’t working.
ETA: just for fun the first down plays in the second half when we got stopped.
1. Josh Williams run for 3 yards.
2. John Emery run for 3 yards.
3. Emery run for -5 yards.
4. Emery run for two yards.
Literally every single stalled drive was because of a terrible first down run. Not a single time where we passed on first down were we stopped

That’s my entire point. They purposefully gave us every pass underneath. They know their defense isn’t good so they gave it to us hoping we would settle then play tighter inside the 25. It was the definition of bend don’t break and it played perfectly because we couldn’t throw for shite deep in the middle of the field
The law of averages will work in your favor as a defense if the offense is going to consistently dink their way with 14+ play drives
If you want to score as an offense you have to get big plays

USC ran the ball far far worse than us and yet found way more big plays passing than us….

We at Tech will happily take Sloan back!

Because we gave them obvious looks in some situations where they took advantage on the ground for chunk yardage.

USC basically turned us into a Mike Leach team when facing zone coverage

You’re correct that more big plays would’ve helped. But the offense was getting plenty of 8-15 yard plays when we were consistently throwing the ball. Even 5-7 yard plays.
The thing that lost us the game was refusing to just take the 7-8 yard passes as our methodical way of moving the ball and insisting on running it for an average of 2 yards which does nothing. It’s essentially a lost play. Again the proof is in the pudding. Every single stalled drive was because of a bad first down run

We were so predictable they were able to cheat and gamble at will vs the running game.

Not a good debut for sloan.
Too many weapons on the field to be that boring in the second half.

Agree with this. His numbers were ok, but deceiving. Bad decisions on RPO, getting antsy and throwing to check downs when other receivers are open. He had plenty of time to throw but was distracted. Outside running lanes were there, but he doesn’t run at all.

I agree. USC was a horrendous defense a year ago. I doubt they’re all world now. Nuss shredded a great Georgia defense and a good Wisconsin defense.
There’s no reason to play as conservative as we did. I highly doubt USC was elite enough to lock down the deep and middle of the field. It looked like they played cover 4 most of the night.

My grave concern that Kelly just does not learn from his mistakes was manifest last night, especially in the second half.

As Mike Leach used to say 'the best defense is a touchdown'. Going conservative cost us the game.
