I saw the Bertman baseball camp post the other day and was just curious if anybody here attended Joe Dean’s Dixie basketball camps in Summit, MS as a kid? I have vivid memories of it being pretty highly attended and almost cult like! I remember one of the Mannings was there. Probably Cooper. I remember Joe Dean Jr (Birmingham Southern College HEY!) and Mark Dean leading 80s AIR-Robics at 7 in the morning and GOD was that miserable in a gym w no AC in Mississippi in July before breakfast.

I made a trip to Dixie. I thought it was fun and games, it was hoops from sun up to sun down. I was in the SEC (middle group). I didn't have to do it, but I remember kids having to run a "tour" if they left their lights on. I think I came back with five or six Converse t-shirts. Seems like I remember a bear in a tiny cage on the campus.

“Flush it twice, it’s a long way to the cafeteria”

My younger brother and cousin attended several Dixie basketball camps in the early 80s. They still talk about today and have great memories and life lessons.
During the same time frame, I was attending wrestling camps at Iowa and Oklahoma State and has similar camp memories learning from Dan Gable.

Yes sir, attended with my high school team in '83. That camp was straight up hoops all day, had some good coaches there, good instruction.
The year I went Tommy Hodson was the best player there, hands down. Yes, that Tommy Hodson.

Went in the late 90's early 00's. Awesome camp
“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.”

Lakeside Oaks here. Joe Dean and Brad Bryant along with Apple Sanders, Dan Hester, Fig Newton and Momma Laonie. Black and white instructional films - Hank Iba. Barrack style accommodations. Is where I met Press and Pete.
Joe played hoop and Dad ran track - were lifelong friends. His three children were in my age range - yes, I am old

Does this camp still exist? That was always the best week of summer.
And yes the cafeteria was amazing. If I recall correctly the milkshakes in the hall after basketball for the day were awesome!
ETA: ^^ SEC Free Throw Champion ^^ (not sure which year)

I went twice. Great camp, but I don’t remember 7am wakeups. I remember them waking us up before the sun came up to run. Great teaching and overall camp though. One of my teammates and I also went one year to the University of Tennessee camp when Don Devoe was their coach. That was a really great camp also.

I went in summer of 89 or 90. I had fun. Gym was hot as hell without AC. You had to do some type of skit deal if you were in trouble. I was never in trouble but the guys I went with were always in trouble and I got pulled up on stage to share the fun/embarrassment with them. I believe if you won your age group would do something about "We got the Bear" since SWCC mascot was the Bears.

I attended. I remember something about being a "wallbanger". Great times, definitely got better at basketball during the week I spent there.
