If O is going to throw millions at an NFL db coach, how can you not give it to the SF db coach?
At least we know he knows how to coach at top level.

I hate even having to type this....

Bama replaces an OC and DL coach with two former NFL head coaches, and LSU hires two “young and energetic” NFL position coaches to take over OC and DC duties.

Yep... bad optics.

There will be a lot of “football experts” that will piss on this hire just so they can slam O.

A bunch of crybabies and highschool cheerleaders on this board. Crying about a hire. Give the guy a chance. It's underwhelming, I wanted this guy, why we couldn't get him. Old arse men acting like little beetches.

It’s a garbage hire. As a Green Bay fan I watched Minnesota closely. It’s the worst pass defense the Vikings have ever had, some of that is personnel but this guy flat out sucks as a DC hire.

Don't know how he will be as a DC but I like how he makes things simple for his players

quote:

No rookie corners have played more in Minnesota for Zimmer than Dantzler and Jeff Gladney, and the Vikings haven't given a snap this season to a corner with more than three years in the NFL. The pandemic sent coaches back into their hard drives and memory banks for practice plans they'd used at lower levels, searching for ways to educate young players quickly.

Jones had just the thing: a one-page guide he used to give freshman defensive backs in college, with a list of the questions they need to answer as they watch film.

"It may be, who are the top receivers? What type of receivers are they — are they possession receivers, are they speed receivers?" Jones said. "How do they catch the ball, their alignment in their stance? What are the top formations that you see? What are the top tendencies that you're getting out of those formations? So if they have something in front of them to help guide them as they watch film, then they're not just watching as a fan or to watch plays, but they're watching with some intent, and understanding there's a purpose to it."

Schumann , had he succeeded, would've been a threat to Orgeron. Ed can't clap and cheerlead while looking over his shoulder.

Oh interesting, I never looked at it like that.

Doesn’t matter that he’s coached at the highest level or under one of the best defensive minds of the last 20 year

Why has the defenses he's coached at all had poor results if he's was coaching with the "best defensive minds" of the last 20 years?

If that's all that was needed to land this job then there should have been hundreds of candidates.. Of all the Rants about coaching hires, this one is well deserved. Based on experience and results this guy should never have gotten an interview.

Sure this guy "could" be a good coach, I'd have like one that wasn't questionable in nearly all the check boxes.

Thank you for reinforcing what I posted. You have a specific and ignorantly narrow criteria and if it isn’t met you melt. It’s paint by numbers coaching hires which are almost never how they happen in reality. I don’t know where you’re getting these terrible “results” or resume from, he was at Wisconsin with Aranda and had a top 2 defense in the power 5 while there. He was DC at a small school and dominated there. So I guess your bashing comes from the fricking NFL!! By far the highest level of football there is. He was under Aranda and Zimmer, it doesn’t get any better but you guys prefer bums like Pelini.

His last four seasons have been spent coaching bottom 10 nfl passing defenses. All of whom were significantly better before he was hired.

So there’s that

Well at least whatever D he fields this year he won't be carrying the burden of having one "significantly better" from the prior year.

This board is amazing and that's not a compliment.

Best available defensive coordinator in the country? That's easy. It's Wade Phillips. He's 73, white and he hasn't had a college coaching job in 45 years.
The drop-off after Wade, however, is major.

Orgeron has talked repeatedly about getting the right fit. We all know how bad fits like Pelini and Canada turned out.
The new DC has to be a good fit not only with Ed, but also with Corey Raymond and everyone else, especially the players.

I can't judge how Daronte Jones' defensive backs have performed in the NFL. I don't have time to study film or assign PFF grades. But the guy was hired by one of the best defensive minds in football, Mike Zimmer, and if Jones got along with Zimmer and learned under Zimmer (and Marvin Lewis) these past few seasons, to me that's an easy plus.

Answer this: Was the LSU defense's problem this past season Xs and Os? Or was it that the players didn't like and wouldn't play hard for the ball-breaking, constantly deriding Pelini? I would say the latter caused the former.
