His curve ball mainly yesterday. But he has to be able to throw both for a strike.

I don’t think paul skenes is completely cooked if he has to throw FB for an inning

Well throwing 100+ will do that for you. But also, MLB hitters would crush Skenes if he fastball only. But Skenes is also a unicorn. You don't just compare everybody to what he can do.

It stays on plane a really long time and he likes to leave it up in the zone. Last year in the CWS, he had some good movement on it.

Two different publications said two different things. Are you really trying to pretend that being a top 150 prospect and being mocked into the first round are two wildly different opinions?

This is a performance business, not projection

You are totally missing the point of what I said. At this point you are too dumb to even continue to argue with.

Superset him with Dutton each one time through order and that should get you halfway through a game 3 with minimal damage. Just my take imo

Sure thing chief. You are out of your league. Agree that it is best for you to go quiet now.

Hurd is his own worst enemy. Once it starts going sideways it starts messing with his head and it’s hard for him to recover. Hopefully he figures that out before his next outing.

Thatcher’s problem is the same as every pitcher who has electric stuff but has command issues.

When he is confident, trusts his stuff, and just goes out there throws, he can be extremely effective. But, too often he loses that confidence and starts trying to place the fastball in a dot size hole on the outside corner instead of just ripping it.

He also has a lot of trouble working the lower part of the strike zone. He doesn’t hang the breaking ball, so he gets away with it bc of the movement on his fastball and breaking pitch, even when high in the zone. But more often than not that will bite you eventually. Idk about yall, but while I was loving the swings and misses in the first 2 innings, I was just waiting for someone to tee up one of those belt high breaking balls.

All of that above is why the dude can look like a future Big Leaguer for 2 innings, then a low-tier college pitcher just one inning later.

Long story long - Dude just needs to trust his stuff, and get the ball down in the zone. If not, then I don’t see a scenario where you can use him for more than 2-3 innings.

At the front sign of adversity he starts trying to aim the ball and the adversity accelerates.

He's a projected first round pick.

so you made a statement

quote:

It was discussed on Moscona's show, I believe yesterday. Go find it for yourself if you don't believe me. They were saying that he was listed as a first rounder in a recent mock draft that came out sometime in May. I have no reason to come on here and just make shite up.

then you based it off a local radio show of a guy who talks out his arse

quote:

Listed in the top 150 prospects in the upcoming draft.

then provide a link disproving your original statement

quote:

My gosh, some of you are the dumbest individuals on this planet. I think a brick wall would understand better.

and then everyone else is an idiot because we cant follow what you're saying

It's tough. There's different philosophies but sometimes guys have to work thru issues in live innings for growth.

No doubt. Starting him yesterday was definitely the right move.

quote:

It's like in basketball if a shooter is in a slump sometimes you have to shoot your way out of it,

Right. But it's one thing to let a guy try to shoot his way out of a slump on a random Tuesday night in 1 of 82 regular season NBA games. And why starting Hurd yesterday was the right move. The result of that game didn't really mean anything in the big picture except for ol' Herm's adage that "You play...to win...the game. HELLO!!). But it was also why it was disappointing. After this tournament, there are no more games that don't matter, no more with no pressure, no more "let's throw him out there to see if he can pitch his way out of his slump." shite's about to get real.

quote:

Really hope he feels like there were building blocks he could add on to in future opportunities because it's clear we need the third starter who can eat some outs so we don't have to go to the back end of our bullpen.

I agree completely, and LMJ made a similar point. The big question from yesterday is not how we fans feel about his performance, but how did Thatcher Hurd feel about it. Does he take the good of the 1st 2 innings and gain some confidence to build upon? Or does he sink even farther into his head, thinking it's inevitable he's going to eventually go to shite? And does Jay know him well enough to know how he's really feeling and whether he can trust him to give him the pill in a game with the season on the line?

Speaking of, I don't know if Jay knew he had some mental demons coming in to LSU or figured it out last fall, but since the beginning of last year he has gone out of his way to try to build Hurd's confidence in the media. Always talking about how great his stuff is, how we couldn't win the CWS without him (turned out to be right), just never saying a bad word about him, despite his performance. Started this year saying the same kind of things, especially after he really struggled in his last few spring outings. Jay obviously knows it's a delicate balancing act with how to treat him mentally. I hate to use this word, but he's fragile. The kind of guy that needs a pat on the arse rather than a kick in it.

But everybody's right that if we are somehow to make it to Omaha and stick around for a bit, Thatcher Hurd is going to have to get some outs for us. How many and when is the question.

Hurd is good as long as you have someone warming up as soon as he throws the first pitch. When it gets ugly it happens quick

Boy that's a great assessment. He is improving, but when the rides starts to get shaky the wheels fall off fast!
Still believe him giving us 2-5 quality IPs over regional/super regional play will be essential to get to Omaha.

Actually, I have heard Moscona say that he was ranked 101 at least 3 times this week. The point was the same, though. He has big league stuff and is capable of finding some confidence, getting hot, and having a great outing. But he doesn't have a big league mentality or big league command right now. And that's more obvious after every time he's run out there. I think he WAS a projected 1st rounder going into last season. But scouts see what we do and he has dropped a ton.

I don’t think he’s close to being what we expected him to be.

But this team could use a guy who is the equivalent of a 6.0 ERA. we are going to need those guys. He might be close to being that guy.

Or really far away?

Yes

His issue is still in his head. He has all the tools he needs, he just gets thrown off when a few things go sideways for him and he can't seem to recover.

He’s a guy that just needs to throw a good inning or two in a game. He cannot be a starter for you.

Not really. If Jump and Holman are on then he won’t pitch. Made it the first two day in Hoover with 4 pitchers.
