I'll go with Rene Escobar.

Worth it just for his hair in the LSUsports pic.

The decision did come down to Mahtook and Dugas and LSU chose the right one there. Mahtook contributed to a national title. Dugas hasn't been to Omaha.
I've seen a lot of responses like this. Mahtook, while very important to the National Title team, was not the Mahtook of the past two years. Further, outside of Homers and an edge in RBI (likely attributable to the fact that Mahtook batted in the middle of the lineup while Dugas led off) it could easily be argued Dugas was more productive than Mahtook that specific year. While I recognize Mahtook has that HUGE at bat in the first game against Tejas, Dugas put up very impressive and comparable numbers in year one.
Mahtook exploded in the subsequent years widening the gap, but to base the decision on that first year probably isn't the best indicator.

Evaluating it as we sit here today though, would you take three years of Mahtook of four of Dugas?

not sure of a good baseball analogy to get my opinion across, So I will just say I would not trade Mahtooks 3 years for a Dugas 4 year campaign.
I would hope Mainieri continues to recruit program players that will develop over 4 years with a descent mix of phenoms and maybe a few kids that will pass up the $ to get a few years of college life, a recipe that served Bertman well not too many seasons ago.

quote:I disagree. We know that with Mahtook we win a national title. We have no idea what happens with Dugas. We might win all four years, or we might not win any. But again all we know is that with Mahtook, we win the 2009 national title. One in the hand is worth, in this case, four in the bush. Ergo, looking back, I will still take Mahtook.

David Grewe wasn't exactly a great idea.

baseball is not like any other sport because of the 11.7 schollies.
to build a team, you need walk-ons or players that will accept 1/3 and not bolt to someone else because they are offered 1/2 or more. tulame has tried to buy two position players into their program with 3/4 or full schollies & it has bit them when the player is injured & they lose two positions- pitcher & batter.we were right taking mikie! won nc with him & bama has not made the cws & will not make it

It seems like most people would take Mahtook. Just playing devil's advocate, Mahtook wasn't the catalyst for the title. It was clearly Coleman, a healthy Ranaudo, and a dominant Ott. Players that Bama didn't have.

The fact is Mainieri didn't think Taylor was SEC material. He flat out told Thibodeaux (Teurlings Catholic coach) this. Sometimes you get it wrong. Mainieri projected on size/power, he never thought Taylor would be the hitter he was in high school in the SEC. It happens, you miss sometime !

And Mahtook was instrumental in our national championship. No way would we want to give up having him.

I was under the impression that LSU didn't try to sign him..

i remember cm saying that we were set @ outfield & althought taylor was a better player @ the time , he thought mikie had more upside. he was right!

Impeccably researched. Consider the myth debunked. You're a twit and possibly Smoke.
