He's a decent player and we'll need him down the road. Experience counts for a lot and he has plenty of it. He'll never be an all SEC type of guy, we already knew that.

The guy makes that Touchdown pass last night and the rant would be talking about RS making a heck of a catch after landing on his back and holding on to the ball. The rant would be talking about how he could be this year's receiver...Blah ,blah, blah,,,,
The truth is; he gets open all the time and if he focus more on catching the ball better he could end up having a great season...

In 10 years RS will still be a great represenative of LSU.

That catch tonight was a td.

The sad truth is...
Both LSU and Shepard would have been better off if he didnt go to LSU.
Now before you hit me with the "Shut up, he's a good kid, he's a contributer, etc. etc."
Think about it this way. Does LSU really have a use for Shepard? And since being at LSU, has Shepard really been able to showcase his talents fully? He was a top flight recruit. Im sure every player has a desire to be "good" or great somewhere.
Shepard should have just went to some other spread option school that would have made him a very good college QB. He may have even suckered a team into drafting high as a WR based on potential (like Denard Robinson will)

Now this is a guy who REALLY doesn't get it. If you think RS could have been a QB of ANY kind AT any level of CFB then you are letting some high school film make a fool of you. RS had a great HS career and some of the best highlight reels ever. But his talents haven't transferred to the D-1 level...at least not to the level expectations set. He is a great kid and pretty good complimentary player for LSU...just not an elite one.
Idk man.
I watched Braxton Miller earlier today for OSU. He physically looks just like Russell Shepard. He throws ducks as well, but in that type of offense, in that type of conference he's able to rack up big yards.
ETA: Taylor Martinez, Denard Robinson, Braxton Miller....Are these guys that much physically better than Shepard...and are these guys great throwers of the football? No and no. Still effective in college.

Yes - he just doesn't have it

Yes, this may sound strange but he's more of an athlete than a football player. He doesn't have a position.
I don't know. Do athletes trip over their own feet as some guys pointed out here? What about Bama in November? Remember he caught that pass and fell down? It might be a stretch in logic, but that failure might have cost us the national championship. Do great athletes drop balls that hit them in the hands?
No, the truth is that Shep is not a great athlete. He peaked in HS. Who knew that was as good as he would get. Part of recruiting, and drafting in the NFL, is guessing who has upside.
Last, don't feel sorry for Shep. He apparently has a great personality and drive. These are way more important than athletic ability. I bet he turns out to be way more successful than some of his teammates who get drafted in the top three rounds - but not as a player.

They should use him with more quick passes, end arounds, etc. He looked good last year when the ball was in his hands. He isn't a very good receiver
He doesn't have the hands to catch the quick passes. He should have transferred to team that throws the soft passes. He and Mett don't appear to be compatible.

Is it time to finally give up on Russell Shepard being a big time player?
That ship sailed a long time ago....Time to move on to other recievers.
Good luck to Russell.

You never give up on anybody but this guy has not improved at all. Perhaps LSU hyped him too much but he is not now helping us win.

The good news is that Mett seems to like to spread it around
He should spread it to Shepard less!
Shepard will gradually disappear as an option. The sooner, the better.

Should have been a DB
Maybe but definitely not a WR. He should only be on field in 5 wide sets.

Yeah Shep probably would've been way better off in a RichRod type of offense.

i hate to say it but yes. he gives new meaning to the hands of stone.

I decided to focus on him during a kickoff in the 3rd quarter. He stays back in case the returner breaks free.
Well, the guy DID break free and Sheperd is the only one left to tackle him. He proceeds to trip over his feet and fall on the ground. Luckily 46 comes out of nowhere to make the tackle.
This is my problem with the Russell Shepard criticism. People are actively looking for his failures, that would be less noticeable had he not been a 5 Star recruit. It's like people are mad at him because he didn't live up to expectations.

He isn't a bust. He has contributed every year. He hasn't lived up to expectations but he isn't a bust.
this...bigtime. the kid has contributed and expectations were unreasonable high considering the hype out of hs. he will continue to bust hump trying to help us win. the so-called "drop" last nite could easily been called a td and was the result of the huskie back punching the ball out after he was down with the ball in complete possession. he probably will never be "all that" for the same reason none of our rb's will ever be considered "all that". we win with quality depth and, as someone said before, Mett will look for and find the open receiver...not his favorite. and that's a good thing.

SOmething tells me if he hand went to Texas he would be a starting running QB like vince young. We mis-used him at LSU and for that I feel bad.
the horns told him he wouldn't get a shot at QB...
