Is it possible for LSU Football to be over-looked?

Stemming from a conversation with an in-law. LSU, for the past 2 decades, has consistently been a 5 star program. They recruit with the best every year. I'm not sure if any team travels as well as LSU. The one position that has been their Achilles heel has been QB, but even that seems to be on the mend.

I ask because it seems as though LSU, even in 2019, has not been in the preseason national championship discussions. The most recent exception being 2011.

Am I just a homer?

Don't get me wrong, I would much rather fly under the radar. It just seems that the talking heads view LSU as a bunch of sister humping coon asses.

From 2013 to 2017, LSU was being over ranked preseason. They were 6th in 2019 I think which was reasonable. If anything, they have gotten too much respect.

Even after a bad year LSU will always be looked at as an elite program by opposing coaches, IMO

In the SEC only two teams get all the preseason national championship hype. Georgia, which hasn't one won a natty in 40 freaking years in the SEC East and Alabama in the SEC West.

Meanwhile, as long as Nick Saban stays at Alabama, Alabama will always get the national championship preseason hype.

Furthermore, UGA, which is not often even the second or third best team in the SEC, will also always continue to get the early preseason hype because they are usually the best team in the much weaker SEC East.

I don't know about being overlooked but it sure seems like the talking heads don't give LSU a lot of respect.

I'm not saying that as a homer, it's just the way they talk about LSU.

We've won 3 nattys since 2003 with 3 different coaches, you never see them mention that. There's a reason for it. He's over there in Alabama.

Our season last year didn't help but I also understand that Bama is always good. Are they unbeatable, no. You will earn the win though. But even when we beat them, it's like we don't get a lot of credit for it. It's usually something like, "Bama beat themselves" or something like that.

One other thing I don't understand is the love Georgia constantly gets in preseason rankings. It's just weird. It's every year. They're always top 10 and then you see them play and they drop a game to someone they shouldn't.

It's happened like 4 years in a row. Same thing with OU. They're always there. And they drop a game to a team they shouldn't.

Which is why I don't put a lot of stock into preseason rankings.

We do our part, the rest will fall into place. I don't listen to the talking heads. They do it just so people will be like, "they said what? I have to tune in and see that nonsense." I only watch ESPN when a game is on.

A&M is a little over hyped as well. I'd say in 2018 we were over looked.

In general, yes. The media has their narratives. LSU has brought long-term consistency, but not necessarily season-to-season.

LSU is easily top-6 football at minimum for last 2 decades. But we sort of ebb and flow.

As far as respect is concerned, I don't really rely much on rankings. It's simple for me; The more teams that circle you on their schedule, the more respected you are as a program. There's not a team on our schedule, year in and year out, that doesn't circle LSU and view it as a huge game.

Bama, UGA, UF, and A&M are the media darlings right now. Leach and Kiffin get attention for their personalities. I like the spot we’re in right now. Everyone is kind of writing us off much like 2018.

coaching will always hold LSU back.

Most years LSU is an outback bowl level program, with a ny6 level bowl maybe sprinkled in. Then about once every 5 years they have an actual contender.

This is all I know. The LAST TWO TIMES we've played Georgia, the COMBINED SCORE is 73-26. Case closed.

No, it hasn’t. It’s been a 4 star program with a few 5 star years.

We have the second most championships in the last 20 years, that’s all that matters. Unfortunately number one is in our same division, so we get overlooked. Any other division or conference and we get all the hype.

no, it isn’t.

The claim wasn’t “one of the top programs in the past few decades.” It was “ a consistent 5 star program for 2 decades”

Would you call the entire stretch from 2012 to 2018 the body of work of a “consistent” 5 star program?

In case you forgot, that six year stretch, a third of the claimed “consistent” time, only had one team in the top 10, and an unranked team.

And the highs of 2019 are averaged by the lows of 2020. Cry COVID disruptions all you want, other perennial powers somehow remained competitive. We fretted if we were going to have a winning season.

The only period in that time frame where we were high level consistency you are talking about was 2005-2011

In the 21st century LSU has won 3 national championships. Only Alabama has won more. All while being the only team to play teams ( every year ( Alabama, Florida and Auburn ) that have won 10 national championships between them. We play the best.

Now because we have had 5 loss seasons mixed in there from time to time, we get overlooked. Mainly because nobody has ever perceived our coaching to be elite. So yeah, our time is loaded for 2021 and we are being overlooked. There is no way this team is not in the mix unless the wheels have fallen off as the critics say and I am just not getting it.

We’ve only really beaten them twice since they became dominant - 2011 and 2019.

In 2011 everyone was saying Bama beat themselves, and they were right. Bama had the statistical advantage, and looked like the more complete team. In the rematch they humiliated us.

In 2019 I never heard anyone say Bama beat themselves. LSU was clearly the better team, and the natinal media reported it that way.

I feel a lot better with a more normal offseason
especially with so many new coaches

Wow, so 1 out of 5 over the last 20 years would be 4 contenders. And during that time EVERY contender played in the National Championship game? And those four contenders produced 6 SEC Championships?
