It's really not having to pay to park that's the issue. It's the lack of access. Campus used to look awesome as soon as you crossed Highland. Trucks and trailers were everywhere with elaborate set ups. Even when they went to game by game pay it was fine. It's when the reserved lots started getting further and further away from the stadium that it became a problem. I mean, even the Union garage is a reserved lot now.

The fricking parking map even has sponsors for a few of the parking lots on it

I’d like to see the RV lot get moved back near the stadium. The old Lot C, current 401.

Leftovers get moved to TD Village.

As a fan who regularly went to games during what I'd consider the golden years of LSU football from 03-2010, I was able to see a great atmosphere both tailgating and in the stadium.

I moved away for several years, and didn't go to a game from about 2010-2015. What I came back to, was a shell of what used to be. The campus atmosphere was a joke. It didn't even look like there were that many students tailgating, and the in-game experience was utter shite.

From the time you set foot on campus until you leave the game, you are getting waterboarded by a corporate orgy. Not to mention TGBFTL got completely neutered because "bad words aren't part of who we are at LSU" to the piped in dogshit music blaring, and everything in between, it has been awful.

Couple in the fact that we haven't fielded an offense since 'Nam, and that BR already has a half million more people than its infrastructure is intended for, nothing about any of this screams "I can't miss this game!"

I go to a company tailgate all the time right on Stadium Drive, sometimes i go to games (if given tickets while at the tailgate) my family and I do like the Tailgating atmosphere, but in no way do I consider myself a "Freeloader" just because I sometimes would rather leave before the game and watch it at home without having to deal with traffic later.

You are a freeloader and exactly what is the number problem with the gameday experience at LSU

Nothing wrong with that it is that if you are not given tickets for free you go home.

Unpopular opinion: Tailgating does not necessarily = attendance. There are enough tailgaters on a given Saturday to more than fill the stadium. In fact, I would argue for a negative correlation. People complain about the awful parking and traffic, which in large measure is caused by tailgaters who aren't even paying customers. Alleva did a lot of things wrong, but I favored his attempts to get the freeloaders off campus.

This is the issue. They need to find a way to get rid of the people who take up space and have no intention of going to the game. I am not sure what can be done. How about not letting anyone park on campus unless they can show game tickets? How about taking up all of the parking passes and coming up with a new system that stops someone from have a bunch of parking passes.

You're going to get a ton of downvotes, and I am all for fostering the tailgating atmosphere that I grew up with, but you make an interesting point. One of my biggest gripes is with the move to charge for gameday parking inside of Highland and, specifically, what a shite show it has been in how they have mismanaged it. This has had a DIRECT impact on my attendance for the cupcake games. For those games, if we weren't tailgating, we could get to the game a few hours before kickoff and usually find a spot to park (often a spot vacated by someone who was tailgating earlier and left before the game). Once they started charging for parking and added a deadline for when you could park, that ended that practice. As a result, as mentioned, you now have a lot of unused parking on campus and if you aren't tailgating and it's a bad opponent, it takes a whole lot of school spirit to overcome the headache of dealing with the traffic in and out and the parking to watch LSU beat the snot out of an overmatched team while "enjoying" shitty overpriced Aramark concessions.

Hell, I would even pay the $20 with zero gripes if I could do it BEFORE the game. Most of those lots are numbered. It would not be that difficult to pay for your spot, print your pass at home, and know where you are parking before you leave the house.

That’s how you create a secondary market that inflates the pricing and possibly leaves no spots for the people who are at the game looking for parking vs people who may buy the pass and decide to skip on the game for whatever reason

Im sorry I cant always afford tickets, because I have other bills to pay. so given the choice between paying bills or going to a OVER PRICED LSU game I choose to pay bills. I consider myself LUCKY to work for a great company that does give employees tickets.

Sounds like they aren't so great if they don't pay you enough to be able to afford tickets

Or just do like literally any other sporting event and hand a guy $20 when you drive in the lot

I’m curious how is that a freeloader I work for a company they give me free tickets I’d be a fricking idiot to go out and buy tickets if somebody’s willing to give them to me

Not to mention most the time they are on the 50 yard line.

You self righteous a-hole you can’t sit there and tell me you would do the same thing if you had the opportunity

as a freeloader(tailgater who doesn't go to the game) we made the gameday atmosphere. getting there before sun up, hosting and cooking for friends who want to have a place the hang out until game time. Uncle Joe killed tailgating. I was along nichloson sidewalk in the glory years, and yes maybe it got a bit too rowdy, but man what a show. now people want to park near the stadium and arrive at 4 for a 6pm kickoff. open up the campus,to pre-Alleva. what a sight..

I don't know what Woodward (or anyone else) can do about the parking/traffic situation. The improvements being made (new buildings, streets initiative, etc) make life better for the students and employees on campus every day. No denying it makes things harder for the 7 days a year when there is a home football game.

But if choices need to be made, then the students should always be the beneficiary of those choices.

LSU is landlocked and there are increasingly fewer places to build new stuff without taking over grass and parking lots. A massive new parking garage would help with the parking issues, especially for those fans who have no desire to tailgate. But where to put it?

He can definetly help with the concession problem.

The corporate whoring? I don't like it, but I do like the new locker room and the great training facilities. It's the corporate whores that pay for those, not us. Keeping up with the arms race means you have to sell a part of your soul.

Was sort of like this in last year's Georgia game. Last year, at some point, police stopped letting cars ON CAMPUS unless they had a parking pass. Of course, that was the BIG GAME, moved to 2:30 PM for CBS and a traffic nightmare.

But I think it's not much too much to ask that LSU limit it to showing at least ONE GAME TICKET, not a parking pass, but at least ONE GAME TICKET per car to enter the campus. Will there still be some folks driving onto campus that are not going to the game? Sure, but only if SOMEONE in their party has a ticket.

I hate Alleva and like Woodward as much as the next guy, but they have nothing to do with traffic nightmares.

Have to agree with this. Believe it or not, traffic is better than when it was in the 80’s.

Tailgating has diminished for so many reasons but a big one for me is the RV lots not being right up by the stadium. I used to be in awe of the Wednesday night arrivals. The nacho bar paid tailgating scene is down-right sac religious
