In 1988, how the hell did LSU manage to schedule:

Texas A&M, THE Ohio St. and Miami (FL) all in the same year?
Was this more common back then? Three OOC games like this just don’t happen anymore.
Also, wtf happened with this team? Start the year by blowing the doors off of A&M, lose a close one to highly ranked THE Ohio St away, and then have Miami blow the doors off of you at the end of the year.

big OOC games were way more popular back then.
I mean in 2011 we had Oregon and WVU, both won their conferences.

I could be wrong but that was pre BCS so a lot of times many teams claimed or had disagreements about the true national champion. I always thought they scheduled harder teams then since it was sole based on mostly (from what I understand) subjective poles.

It was 10 years before the BCS.

We had a decent team but the coaching wasn’t good and we were WAY behind Miami in terms of talent.
That Miami game was my 2nd or 3rd LSU game ever as a kid. That was a miserable rain game and we got demolished. Me and my dad stayed all the way until the end though.

LSU should have never lost that game to OSU.

Both of those were awesome games.

Miami was one of the best teams during those years. They blew out a lot of teams. As did Nebraska and Notre Dame. The landscape was much different than it is now.

I want to say the scheduling of "mid major" teams became more popular in the 90s.
Since as far back as I can remember I always kept up with CFB and it wasn't until the late 80s until I was old enough to start remembering things and I just remember playing more "rent a win" teams starting in the early 90s.

Broadhead loved those loaded up big name schedules.

I was at that game against Miami in a monsoon as a 5 year old

I remember that season vividly. we lost a lot of talent from the 87 team. Hodson was throwing to running backs converted to WR. the OSU game was gifted to them but also we were screwed by a TD given to them at the end on a blatantly trapped ball. no replay review back then. Hodson had a bad game against Florida. the team didn't give a shite about the bowl game against Syracuse. lots of injuries took its toll as well.

My dad asked to leave the Sugar Bowl in 04 with 10 minutes left... I was like “dude, we are staying until we see crystal...”

87 was the tie; guy named Olive did us in at the Horseshoe in 88 we never learn run the ball and clock. Sat through the monsoon with Steve Walsh and Cleveland Gary ripping us. Still won SEC I believe that year?

'79 had Colorado, USC and Florida St.
USC and Alabama were both #1 at the time LSU played them
