He over-relies on the blitz to mask talent issues and the results are -EV

He should have already learned this, but in week 4 he was still trying and making the UCLA offense (which is dog shite) look good.

He has to mask the issues. The strength of the defense lies in the pass rush, which is well above average. So his focus coming into the year was havoc rate.

His rotations on units in the first half is interesting. We sometimes go to our third stong dts and safety's in the first qt.

We have a great defensive staff, and they are recruiting at a high level.

Slo, we still need more work to do zone efficiently. Baker seems to want them to play with more intensity hence the blitz.

Just when we thought his takes couldn’t get any worse.

He could just sit back like House and refuse to try to get sacks.

He has to, we can't cover or locate a ball in the air.

I don’t think that’s a fair criticism. He is blitzing to mask deficient DB play. If they don’t get to the QB they are likely not getting off the field.

Baker and the defensive assistants have done a great job. The problem they have at LB and S is partly talent but the other part is not playing their assignments. They like to free lance which gets them out of position and and creates busts that allow big plays. Burns is the worst at this but they keep rolling him back out there.

They have to be more disciplined in the secondary or we will continue to see big plays that lead to scores.

We have Florida’s secondary. Should have expected monumental improvement with that squad given the hire.

We need a Jamal Adams/Grant Delpit type recruit to come through. Glaring lack of talent. I don’t follow recruiting anymore. Hopefully we have a guy lined up.

lol. They have to create turnovers. They knew we were blitxzing in the first half and were ready. He knows they are going to bend but are also going to create some havoc. It’s called weighing things out and making a decision. They look bought in and are playing with more energy than I’ve seen in a couple years. A lethal pass rush sure does make a defense better. You don’t know a single thing about that defense that Blake baker doesn’t know.

So I guess the answer here is to just not mask our talent issues?

This is a horrible take. I agree with you on that Baker’s masking the defensive holes, but if we went with your take and not blitz, you get Houses defense. Look where that got us. At least we are creating turnovers and sacks which keeps us in the game and offense honest. I love seeing the pressure we’re getting on QB’s, not to mention playing well against the run. Everyone knows our secondary is weak. Baker is doing what he can with what he has.
