You're dead wrong. The defense diving on the ball is a fumble recovery. If the QB knee hit and the refs missed it, too bad. I couldn't tell if he knelt or not. ANd the QB is NOT immune to the rules governing a dead ball. Where do you people come up with your rule "interpretations"?

someone finally gets it. All of the stuff before this is moot. The ref stood over the ball and wouldn't let wisky snap while the clock ran down.

Actually, he did NOT stand over the ball. The sequence was this:

1- QB simulated (or actually did) kneel and placed ball down
1.A - A few seconds transpire
2- ASU jumps on ball
3- Umpire gently taps the ASU defensive lineman askinghim politely to remove himself from ball
4- Umpire spots ball and steps back while holding up a hand to the center, I suppose telling him don't snap?
5- Umpire continues to hold hand up to center in the "don't snap" mode
6- UW line and QB finally ignore him and attempt to set and snap
7- Time expires.

There was still about 5 seconds left at #4.

Agree with poster above. That Umpire, at least, should not officiate another game.

Official NCAA Football Rules and Interpretations

Rule 4
Article 3. - Ball Declared Dead - A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle or declare it dead:
Section o. Read it for yourself. Ball declared dead when simulated knee placement occurs.
ETA: Profit???

None of this nonsense even matters because

This isn't what happened.

Then why didn't he get up immediately and celebrate? The lineman knew 100% what he was doing and the officials let him do it, just like Navarro Bowman laying on our guys in the Cap One Bowl a couple years ago at the end of the game. Should have been a 5yd delay of game with an untimed down at worst.

If it were a fumble recovery:

1. The clock should have stopped because of change of possession.
2. UW would not have been given the ball to snap.

Bunch of morons up in here

The refs herp derp'd their way through the final 18 seconds of the game with zero awareness or control.

They cheated the teams, the fans, everyone..

Absolutely right. 0% chance the lineman genuinely thought it was a fumble. So many people in this thread are ignoring the fact that the ref blew the whistle before he jumped on the ball.

Anyway, there's no doubt that Wiscy got screwed, but they really did let it happen.

This. That game was clearly meant for Wiscy to lose.

Besides, Wiscy has nothing to play for anyway. If they won the Big 10, they would never make the BCSNCG because they aren't an ESPN-sanctioned team.

Wisc. qb should have spiked the ball. That is how you freaking stop the clock!

He was an idiot for not spiking the ball. What was he thinking!!!!

Wisc. coach was an idiot for not kicking the field goal. Time running out and he calls a running play? Any play???? Pure stupid.

Boils down to Wisc. with no time outs had the game won and decided to give Arizona
St. another chance for a fumble or penalty, or a brain dead QB not throwing the ball away or the clock running out.

It was a long shot for any of that to happen.... but it did. Why give the other team a chance when it isn't necessary.

It's already been mentioned how shaky their kicker is - by doing what the QB did, he was placing the ball on the hash they wanted instead of reverting to the old one.

He kneeled the ball and the ref immediately blew the whistle. What else is there to know?

20 seconds left. Any team that has practiced end-of-game management at all should be able to comfortably manage this series in the presence of competent officiating.

To get better placement for their kicker.

Agreed! Best explanation yet. It did remind me of Cap One Bowl b.s. with Penn State but in that case at least LSU lineman had enough snap to remove Penn State player from ground. Referee in that case should have called Penn State for delay of game very similar to the Arizona State fiasco. Homerism at it's ultimate worst IMHO. Wisconsin was robbed plain and simple no matter what you think of their QB kneeling.
