re: I’m really confused as to why Brian Kelly didn’t work out at LSU

A lot of guys on BK’s ND staff preferred to work for Marcus Freeman. The same goes for Luke Fickel’s staff at Cincy. A lot of those guys are at ND with Freeman.

He had a great run of hiring stud DC’s. A couple of guys named Clark Lea and Mike Elko.
Marcus Freeman was pretty good too.
I know a lot of LSU fans weren't impressed w/ him when he was here, but it's looking like Denbrock was a pretty solid OC . Denbrock coached a number of. different positions w/ CBK at Grand Valley State, Notre Dame and LSU and prob gave a lot of advice outside of his coach role. Losing him prob created a large void that CBK couldn't fill.
ETA: Mike Denbrokck was OC and Marcus Freeman was DC when they coached together at Cincinnati a number of years. Denbrock w/ at ND w/ Kelly when Kelly hired Freeman as DC. It makes me wonder if Denbrock played a role advising Kelly w/ some of his better staff hires. When Denbrock, Kelly may've lost a trusted advisor.

Since it looks like it’s over, I’m a little sad it didn’t work out. I really wanted to rub a title in those salty bitch ND fans and national media who were offended LSU would hire NDs coach away.
Oh well
Oh well

I’m surprised it didn’t work out either. Had all the makings of being great. But he made terrible coaching hires. He fielded a NC caliber offense w JD5 and company but had a defense that was the worst ever at lsu. Every year he’s had some unit sucking arse. Either he’s checked out or just a bad evaluator of talent w both coaches and players.

Totally agree. This isn’t the Kelly we thought we were getting based on his record. He was known for pulling underperforming QBs and sent multiple lineman and tight ends to the NFL.
It makes you wonder what is going on inside the program? The culture is soft.

I don't think he understood what it really took to win in the SEC or how good the competition really is.
Didn't understand how important it was to have a good defense. Didn't understand how tough and physical the linemen are. Didn't understand winning in SEC requires a certain tenacity and mean streak.
We can say NIL changed everything but he ran off Nader and didn't really focus on recruiting when he got here as opposed to you know who. Even Orgeron knew how to recruit.

When it was initially announced he was hired I wasn’t happy. Then I talked myself into it and tried ignoring every red flag because we were in it for the long haul
I thought he’d spend 2-3 years building, either get the natty or come close, then retire or coast on the remaining few years of his deal. Then I thought maybe Kelly will have us perennially stuck at 2-3 losses a year but not bad enough to fire
I did not think it would end in a total train wreck in season firing before we even hit the halfway point

Incredibly BAD Coordinator and Assistant Coach hires. (Still playing out on Offense)

Kelly being fired halfway thru year 4 is a total fricking shocker, whether you love, hate, or don’t care about him

I seem to remember CBK beating Les Miles’ LSU team in the Music City bowl
I also seem to remember that LSU’s offense that day was completely hapless against CBK’s Notre Dame defense.
Soft ND schedule and all…

Same
Beating bama and getting to Atlanta was a nice tonic in year 1 but i always felt his condescending ways would get the better of him.

I wasn’t sold on the championship part but i also didn’t expect this much of a failure.
I did think he was a good short term guy who could build, organize and rejuvenate that program O left us with, which I think he did a pretty good job at doing.
- he took us to an Sec championship
- JD5 won a heisman
It’s crazy how optimistic I was about this season.

Kelly was so fricking overrated, LSU fans made it seem he was hindered by the academics of Notre Dame but reality he is a decent coach but not a good one. I've bitched about him since hiring and hated the hiring.

If he wins no one cares he’s a prick
Losing underwood was a death blow. If we were having this type of season with him, Kelly likely gets 1 more year as he develops
Instead Nuss got the bag , then we went on a spending spree, expectations got really high, and we face planted. Roster next year isn’t in good shape so it’s tough to imagine even with an all new offensive staff things would suddenly turn around. Kudos to those that went ahead and did what was necessary if true

Kelly won everywhere he’s been, he’s not a bad coach
But I think his bread and butter was winning with over achieving 3-4 year program guys. Thats no longer the model

quote:I thought after the Clemson game we might go undefeated. I saw a disciplined team executing a complicated game plan at a high level on both sides of the ball. Sure, I wanted to see more deep balls and more success running the ball, but it looked like Nussmeier had control of the offense and the defense looked really good. I don't know wtf happened.

What of bote has he won?
He beat up on Army, Navy, and Air Force at Notre Dame
He lost the Orange bowl at Cincinnati and resigned before the Sugar Bowl, his biggest bowl wins are the Citrus Bowl

FIFY
You mean Brian Van Gorder's (DC) defense.
