I’m not sure why Baker is getting a pass

We were a missed chip shot (can’t attribute to Baker) FG away from giving up 30.

every time USC wanted to move the ball, they did so easily: HUGE gaps in the zone. DBs are atrocious (not his fault)

No pressure. No turnovers.

Dropping Perkins into coverage on what felt like 90% of his plays.

Playing Penn over Weeks.

The defense was garbage. I know it’s partly a talent issue currently, but whatever scheme he used last night was horrible. USC moved the ball at will

There was no doubt in my mind USC would drive down the field and score

That’s so damn sad

New staff, same results

They got 2 stops with the lead in the 4th and handed it back to the offense…who proceeded to do Jack shite with the ball twice.

Sure they’re deficient in some areas but it was night and day better than last year

I thought he did very well. 27 points against a LR offense is great considering where we came from.

We pressured well and our blitz packages were awesome. I get you guys want to man up and blitz every play but you can’t do that, especially with our personnel.

And most of that isn’t exclusively on the defense

Then why even mention it?

No pressure.

False. They were all over Miller Moss and he outplayed our QB. Shand or Swinson was throwing their LT into the backfield all night.

No turnovers

There were like 4 moments that could’ve or should’ve been turnovers. The one with Whit Weeks the most prominent and it was a good thing he didn’t catch it.

Newsflash: Perkins is a one trick pony as a pass rusher. Shand, Swinson, and Jones were all for more effective than Perkins would have been. He’s a safety. Get the frick over it.

LINCOLN RILEY IS LIKELY THE BEST OFFENSIVE COACH IN THE WHOLE frickING COUNTRY

Lincoln Riley has averaged 40 points a game for about 13 years dating back to his time as an OC.
Defense was fine. (as a whole)

I don’t think he’s getting a pass but the defense looked better last night. They made plays. And they made stops and they gave us the chance to win. Which the offense shat away.

There are talent issues. But they made some plays and overall looked much better.

Offense was in the 15 3 times and got 6 points. Defense actually made plays on the ball and had relatively tight coverage. The dline got pressure all night. They were night and day better than last year. Offensive play calling lost the game.

No pressure? LOL. He had 2 balls batted down, threw a few balls as he was getting knocked to ground, they caused 2 fumbles behind LOS, they sacked him a few times, and knocked him down numerous times. What game did you watch?

Made the defense looks respectable despite how bad our secondary is. Offense didn’t hold up its end of the bargain
Coming into this game, everyone would think LSU won if you knew USC would only score 27.

I'm not sure why there is any frustration with the defense at all.

We're the elite? No. We're they FAR AND AWAY improved in every aspect from last year? Hell yes.

I wouldn’t say night and day.

The offense definitely let the team down. I think they’re culprit #1, but most of the game was swiss cheese defense. Their TE was just living in the seams and the gaps in our zone.

Plus for a guy who hangs his hat on pressure, we maybe had a handful of plays with pressure.

Offense lost the game.

But defense should not feel good about their performance. If last year was the worst defense of all time, last night was like 90% of that. It was not markedly better

If it was last year, Moss would have thrown for 400+ yds and USC would have scored 40+ points. Defense wasn’t the issue last night. LSU had the opportunity to score with 5 minutes left and put the game away. They didn’t

USC's playcalling was arguably LSU's best defense last night.

They punted 3 times:

Two were run-run-pass-punt. The third was the flea-flicker bust on first down then false start putting them at 2nd and 23.

Similarly on USC's first FG -the blindside block call probably saved a TD.

It's an improvement, sure, but Baker is not a miracle worker in game 1.

D is not going to be a savior this year but game one they did what needed to be done to win the game. They gave the offense multiple stops and a chance to extend the lead and Kelly/Sloan sat on their thumbs with conservative play calling and kept USC around when they could have extended the lead to a two possession game

For the first game against a good offensive minded coach I was pleased overall.

our D gave up 7.7 yards per play. And that's not skewed by a small number of huge plays. USC moved the ball consistently all night.

Not good at all.

Feel like we should've used our timeouts on that last drive. We needed to slow the momentum
