Watching the dumpster fire that is TAMU makes me appreciate the effort Woodward puts into hiring the right coach, and not settling for an unknown.

Elko might end up being a great coach at TAMU, but he doesn't have a history that would suggest he can get it done in the SEC. It's a risk for TAMU to hire a guy who hasn't coached in the SEC in some form or fashion.

BK was not a sure thing when Woodward hired him, but BK was one of a handful of coaches who had a resume reflecting that he might be able to have success in the SEC. So there was risk, but it was less than hiring someone like Mike Elko who might be a good coach but let's face it, the ACC is not the SEC.

Thus far Woodward is 3 out of 4 with the hires he has made and, who knows, MM might turn the basketball program around.

Anyway, it's nice not having to worry if LSU is going to hire someone capable of doing the job.

I think Elko is a really good football coach and paired with their NIL machine, I am hesitant to talk shite.

When he was told to. The boosters run that athletic department, that's why they keep stumbling. Similar to Texas. Too many cooks.

And he was not the one that gave him the absurd, undeserved extension.

don’t be.

A&M’s problem isn’t coaching. It’s their entire institution and weird culture.

They’ll always be what they’ve always been—mediocre.

Ahem.

Woodward orchestrated the Jimbo - aTm contract.

Woodward tried to hire Jimbo at LSU before "settling" on Brian Kelly

Woodward is the only AD I know of that has offered his football coaches 10 year deals - Jimbo and Kelly. The first didn't work out so well, the second one TBD.

Not sure what about Woodward gives you this much confidence, but his inability to see through Jimbo's BS is concerning to say the least.

The horrible truth that A&M does not want to admit is that they are not this ultra sexy, blueblood, top tier program.

They were always going to have to go for a diamond in the rough type of hire

Winston Wolfe has a phrase for this. Kelly is not out of the woods yet. We have to fix this defense moving forward without Daniels.

Jimbo and Woody go waaay back. They were buds when Jimbo was the OC here at LSU. It was Woodward that wanted Jimbo at TAMU.

You are aware that it was Woodward who helped put A&M in the spot where they had to hang on to Jimbo for too long, right He's not infallible. He's just done a really good job of seizing opportunities when presented. The only school in the last 30 years who made three different HCs national champions came open at a time a 60 year old HC at ND was accepting that he likely couldn't get over the hump at ND. I don't think Kelly leaves ND for 99% of the jobs in America. But given a NC was the last medal to obtain in his long coaching career and a place where it is PROVEN coaches can achieve such became available to him he took the opportunity. Woodward also played the trump card of "home" with Mulkey that no other big time school could play.

Elko was the aggie DC for 4 years. He was Kelly's DC at ND in 2017 before being hired by A&M.

2 years as HC at Duke may not be enough to tell if he's a good HC, but he had as much success in 2 years as Cutcliffe had in his last 4.

This is true.

I remember reading about how messy his office was and he couldn't find gameplans and notes when needed. He would miss meetings and wasn't putting in extra hours. He was going through that bad divorce and custody shite too, so that probably impacted his day to day focus.

If that is the case, he should have known the issues with Jimbo... Saban hated him so much that when he begged him to take him to Miami, he wouldn't, even when Jimbo offered to come as tight-ends coach... Jimbo is a great example of Peter principle where a guy fails up until it finally blows up in his face. LSU is very lucky it is not happening here.

Woodward is the man that hired Jimbo at A&M. Woodward is also the man that tried to hire Jimbo away from A&M to replace Coach O with. Let that sink in. Count your blessings that Jimbo wanted to stay at A&M
for whatever reasons.

I can understand why this blinded Woody to some of Jimbo’s bullshite. That said, the initial contract was to get a former title winner to leave another P5 school. A&M’s boosters wanted to flex the one thing they had, and that was cash. It was desperate, but it’s what he was demanding. Remember when we flinched the year before, and that was for 7 guaranteed years. Coaches are about security to do it their way and the years and buyout gives them enough of that.

Considering the resources that A&M has, I honestly don’t see the first contract Jimbo got as badly as some of you do. It was the extension after only one sliver of evidence that things might be breaking their way that was stupid and unnecessary. The buyout would have been far more manageable without that. Nothing short of a title or someone pulling a coach away should trigger an extension to a contract that’s not at least half lapsed.

As for BK, 10 years is a long time, but we were also a shite show that needed immediate fixing. Look at how things are going at UF today. Things could have continued as they were or gotten worse here. There are no guarantees. Some of you have this inflated sense of what we are as a program, but things can change if you don’t take action. UF is also a great example of a program of a title with a title in the last 20 years that has slid down a notch in public perception.

As for Woodward’s other hires, basketball doesn’t look great, but let’s see what he can do with what looks to be a good recruiting class. The others are completely unassailable. Anyone who gripes about or dismisses Mulkey or Johnson are fricking idiots.
