Illegal formation on Bama trick play on first play in OT

While it was a great trick play they were in an illegal formation. There were only 6 men on the line of scrimmage. The gain to the one should have been negated and LSU given the option of a five yard illegal formation penalty or 15 yards unsportsmanlike conduct after the play. Would have moved The Tide back to their 40 first and 25.
This morning Bama fans could be growing about the unsportsmanlike call that cost them the game.
Think about it.

Thanks for the link. There are two receivers flanked wide left of the tight end who caught the ball and both are in eh backfield. The two receivers on the right one inside of Cam Robinson and the outside receiver are both in the backfield. The QB is the fifth man in the backfield.

They only had 6 men on the line, and the RB that moved towards Bama's sideline during the shift never came set which is also illegal. You can't see that in the gif above, but it's obvious on the CBS broadcast.

It should have been 1st and 30 from the 45. Let's go back and replay it.

Too bad you cant play the rest of the game under protest like in baseball.

Do you REALLY think havign an extra man in the backfield mattered in that play? Bama beat us.

Both outside WRs are on the line on the right. Hence why one is ineligible and doesnt go downfield for a pass.

It did matter. It could've pinned them farther and altered the drive/play-calling, as the late penalty did us.

Yeah, man, frick the rules, right?
While you can't exactly be happy that the defense gave up a big play, this wasn't the first time this season when a big play should have been negated by a procedure penalty yet the flag wasn't thrown. (Mississippi State's tackle or guard clearly moved early on one of their long touchdown plays as well with no call. Not sure how obvious things can be missed when you have two guys looking down the line from each sideline.)

It was actually a legal play and a great play call.

Yes, because it created confusion on coverages. The left side the defense had to assume the two receivers were eligible as well as Cam Robinson being an eligible receiver and allocate personnel which left them short handed on the opposite side.
Whether it mattered to the play is irrelevant, if he line up illegally its a penalty. If the left defensive end sacks the QB on a scramble to the right and the right defensive end lines up two inches offsides and has no effect on the play the offsides is still called.

Looks to me like #2, White, is on the line to the right of Robinson. Iffy, but he's no further off the line than the right tackle.
Auburn folks around here are arguing that Robinson went out for a pass. Umm, no.
Good play call. Very similar to one Auburn scored a TD against us as well. Sometimes it happens. I bet Chief is sick that Kiffin got him on this one.

With the ball on the 25, it looks to me that #2 is not up on the line. The point is moot, because it didn't get called, but I just wanted to say how it looks to me.

The WR on the very right appears to be leaning back initially which makes him look off the LOS. I'm sure he told the ref "hey, I'm on." Though. The guy just inside of him doesnt go downfield so they didn't get an unfair advantage off it unless they tried to make us think that the outside guy was off the LOS

Looks to me like the players on either side of CRob are off the LOS. Sims is. And then the two at the top of the screen are off the LOS (they have to be or the T would be "covered"). That would make it an illegal formation.
